I hope you are all having a wonderful New Year!
My photography enjoyed very widespread acceptance in the latter half of 2011, and that momentum appears to have carried over into 2012. I was fortunate enough to have both my black and white and color work recognized in a number of national and international competitions and major juried exhibitions.

National Award-Winning Photography
National Exhibitions
My black and white landscape work continues to be well received in California. Following on an exhibit in San Diego, I had two images selected and exhibited at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel (which is famous in the photography world for being the home of both Ansel Adams and Edward Weston). And two images were also chosen for exhibition at the Linus Gallery in LA (Long Beach) -- where I was also proud to receive the Curator’s Award for Best Artist. On the opposite coast, I also had two images chosen for the Monochromatic exhibition at the Darkroom Gallery in Vermont. The image “Prairie Grass” (above) was exhibited in both California and Vermont.
Photographic Healing
In recent months my photographs have enjoyed healthy sales in the healthcare area. Five 75-inch wide prints were purchased by UW Hospital in Madison. The UW Health Family Clinic in Belleville purchased 18 photographs. And another 13 photographs will soon be hanging in a newly expanded Monroe Clinic. Evidence shows that patients heal faster in an environment that includes serene images of nature -- a category into which many of my images fall.
Award-Winning Photography by Michael Knapstein
Award-Winners
My website now has a gallery that includes (almost) every photograph that has won a local, national or international award from 1970 to the present. I am still tracking down a handful of award-winners from the early days. But this gallery includes more than 50 images that represent more than 100 photography awards. To visit the gallery, just click on the image above.
Thank You!
I truly appreciate your continued interest in my work. Wherever you go in 2012, may you go there with good friends!
International Award-Winning Photography
International Recognition
My color work received nods from two major international competitions. One image, “Red Rooster Café” (above) was recognized in the Photography Masters Cup (based in London, England) while four images were named finalists in the 1X Photo Awards (based in Uppsala, Sweden).
Local Award-Winners
Local Awards and Exhibitions
Closer to home, I received two First Place Awards in a photography competition run by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to honor the Devil’s Lake State Park Centennial  (one of my favorite places to photograph). The image above was the first place winner in the “Activities” category. Three images were selected for a juried exhibition at The Madison Club. And three images done in the style of Walker Evans were juried into a traveling exhibition called “A Thousand Words” and were shown at both the Sundance Cinema and the Overture Center for the Arts, both in Madison, WI.
