Letter from the Principal

"Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve" sometimes is a mantra for what could have been.  As we look back, we find information to help us plan for the future.  Maybe that's known to us old guys as a bucket list.

Starting a new school means making a number of decisions much akin to those made when moving into a new house.  With unlimited funds, my new house would be painted in the colors I want, a lawn in place, equipment for the kids, a dog run, growing garden, garage door opener, whole house humidifier…. You get the idea.  Everything would be done before we move in.  Without the funds, you move in and begin changing the colors in some of the rooms, one at a time. A landscape is created over several years.  It takes time to fulfill your list of additions and changes, to create the house you envisioned.

Similarly, we have paced ourselves with the school.   Now that we are more settled, I am ready to start layering on a few new twists.  Most of these are around celebrating hard work and success.  We will begin a Million Word Reader activity, where students will be recognized for reading a million words.  Medals will be awarded and books celebrated.  After all, the more you read the better you get!  Math fluency and accuracy will be a goal for all students to reach over a period of years.  Those that demonstrate skill in mastering their facts will become prominent students at the school.  In the area of fitness, we will have students record their progress running or walking the track, and acknowledge them when they reach multiple mile increments.  These are a few examples of how we will build a habit of working towards a goal.

I recently submitted celebration of student work and their success as a measurable goal to my boss. There is an adage that you get what you measure.  While I’m sure that the students enjoy school, we want to recognize excellence and effort.  There will be no goal, award, or celebration of something a student can’t attain.  But there will be no hand-offs to a student who didn’t put forth the effort, time and commitment to reach the goal.  Like my example of the house, students do not have unlimited funds.  However, they can paint their own house and not hire someone to do it for them.  We want students to set goals and work hard to achieve them.  And then we want to celebrate their achievements.

Celebration is on my bucket list for SIS, as I move from should’ve been to what will be.

Elections for next year's PTA Board took place on May 1st.  A big thank you to this year's Board--Andrea Roberts (President), Dawn Owens (Vice President), Nicole Graziano (Treasurer for two years), and Nicole Rodarte (Secretary for two years) for all their hard work!  Congratulaions to next year's Board--Dawn Owens (President), Cirila Curley (Vice President), Sarah Pulley (Treasurer), and Jen Dale (Secretary).  Also a big thank you to everyone who stepped up to fill various committee and chair positions, from Direct Giving to Communications to Staff Support.  We have an amazing group of parents who are willing to work hard to make Swigert an exceptional school for our children!

There are still some positions that have not been filled.  If you are interested in volunteering as a chair for any of the following positions, please contact Dawn Owens.  Not sure you have the time to chair?  Ask a friend to co-chair with you!

  • Membership Chair (organize membership drives and school directory)
  • Fundraising Chair (oversee all Swigert fundraising; there are also openings for several fundraising sub-committees including sponsorship, tiles & pavers, and dine & donate nights)
  • Literacy Chair (organize two Scholastic book fairs, literacy week and summer reading program)
  • Explorations Co-chair (will work with Amy Douglas as a co-chair this year, and will chair Explorations in 2013-2014)

Purchase EduKits by June 10th for 5% discount

EduKits for next year are now available and if you purchase before June 10th, you will save 5%!

Why shop around at multiple stores for back-to-school supplies and then have to carry heavy bags to school the first day when you can have those supplies delivered directly to Swigert?  EduKits will deliver brand name school supplies that match our teachers' requests exactly directly to their classrooms for next year.  The teachers loved the kits last year, and appreciated the uniformity and quality products.  Not only does this help the teachers but it is also a fundraising event for Swigert since a portion of every EduKit goes to our PTA.  Last year, this raised almost $600 for our school!

Order your EduKits online, or look for the order form going home in Friday Folders.  Remember to order supplies for the grade your child will be entering in 2012-2013.  If you have any questions, contact Swigert parent Kimi Barry at anjanelle@gmail.com or 303-903-1191.

The best way to reach MyEnrichment is through email at molly@myenrichment.com.

Not only are there Enrichment programs for the summer, but the Swigert is already organizing My Enrichment programs for the Fall 2012.  Swigert is planning to offer after-school enrichment on Monday and Wednesday evenings to compliment the Friday Explorations program.  In addition to our current vendors, we are looking to add yoga and several science enrichment opportunities.  Program information will be distributed soon so that parents can make plans for next year.

Please check the Lost and Found

The Swigert Lost and Found is overflowing!  Please take a momment to check it for anything your child may be missing.  You can find it to the right of the South entrance, across from the cafeteria.  All unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the school year.

CorePower Yoga fundraiser for Stapleton Schools

CorePower Yoga Studio in Stapleton is holding an exciting fundraising event this summer in support of our local schools!  They are planning to have donation-based yoga classes in the Founders Green of the 29th Avenue Town Center every Saturday in June and July from 4-5pm.

Each participant who comes to class will have the opportunity to designate the school they would like proceeds to benefit. At the end of class, the yoga instructor will draw one school name out of a hat and all proceeds for that class will go directly to that school (if we have 50 participants donating $10 each....that is $500 going to your school if it is chosen!).  If you have any other questions regarding this program, please can contact Stacey L'Hommedieu or call 303-803-6444.

Carnival at Bill Roberts

Bill Roberts is hosting the second annual Family Fun Carnival and Book Fair on Thursday May 10 5:30-7:30.  They will have carnival games, bounce houses, slides, obstacle course, prizes, treats and more!  Tickets are $5-$12 in advance, $15 at the door. $5 meal available.  A percentage of the profits will go toward the Middle School trip funds.  Doors open at 5:00pm.  Pick up wristbands at the door.  Order your tickets online or at the Bill Roberts front desk.
