A Note from Katie

All right, I’ll say it: For years I’ve been having a secret affair. Whenever I feel like a little flirtation or need a lift on a gloomy day, I can just turn to the object of my affection. But ours is a passion you won’t find in romance novels, and even my husband approves: I am utterly infatuated with flowers.

We were childhood sweethearts, introduced by my mother. Our family would often go on camping trips or even just expeditions through our own backyard, with Mom at the lead, field guide in hand. Her curiosity inspired us kids as we learned to identify the beautiful wildflowers we found. I especially loved the lady’s slippers, which would wave in the wind like graceful little feet.

Years later, when I was working as a caterer in Los Angeles, one of my favorite ways to spend the morning was at the Flower Mart, which is full of vivid, inspirational blooms as well as frenzied florists and decorators. Sometimes I’d slyly follow around an especially savvy customer and just pick whatever she picked. Then, like Mom, I’d go home to look up my discoveries.

You don’t need to limit your flowers to vase and tabletop. With a simple Plexiglas frame, you can create a placemat that will surprise your guests and showcase these gems of nature in an unexpected way. Before you know it, you’ll be swept up in a love affair of your own. (And that’s OK – I’m not the jealous type.)

POSY PLACEMAT

Materials:
Clear, double-sided 16 x 20-inch Plexiglas frame
Fresh flowers

Steps:
  1. Unclip and separate Plexiglas.
  2. Put one piece of Plexiglas on a flat surface.
  3. Arrange flowers on Plexiglas as desired.
  4. Reattach the top sheet of the frame.

Hints:
- Daisies, pansies and dahlias press well. Look for flat, open flowers, rather than tall, closed flowers like roses.
- Pre-press flowers in a book to create a flatter surface.
- Make sure you’ll be able to see the majority of the flowers once the plate is placed on the mat.
