Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Matthew 8:19-20
When I said, “I Do” I knew what I was “signing up for.” I was marrying a pastor. My husband was already a pastor when I met him. I have dated a pastor. I was engaged to a pastor. And I married a pastor. I had an idea of what life in the ministry with a pastor might hold.
Yet, I still struggle with times when I rarely see my husband. When I feel a little like a single mom. I know I’m not alone. I know many of you have been through these times in your lives.
Unforeseen circumstances have placed three ministries in my husband’s hands for the time being as well as his one Sunday a month service at the local jail. He is struggling to serve all three ministries faithfully and often feels like a failure. I struggle to support him, “run” the family and house alone, and remain positive.
Do you ever feel your life is like that witty little saying, “Until further notice, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off. “? This time of year can be especially difficult for many pastors and their families. Holy week brings more than the joys of Easter. Often it’s accompanied by added stress, time away from your husband, and more to do in general. How do we get through it?
“Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.” Micah 7:8 Stressful times like these sure do feel dark. Every night I sit at home alone while my husband is out teaching, counseling, and making hospital visits are lonely. But the greatest thing for a Christian is that our light can never be turned off. It might get clouded over at times by the struggles of this world, but it’s there.
And this Sunday, it will be shining brightest off all. This week is the best time to remember His promises and his blessings. To remember his sacrifice and love. To look at your husband and see Christ's light shining in him as he serves. And most of all, thank the Lord for the opportunities he gives us to share His light with those around us. Then ask Him for strength, energy, encouragement, and the wisdom to guide necessary changes in your life.
Ask the Lord
Blessed Savior. Light of the World, may your light shine ever brightly in our lives. Help us to brush the clouds of sin and stress away. Thank you for rising triumphant and give us victory over our struggles.
