Newsletter #12 - Snow Shader Contest Winner

In our December newsletter we announced a contest using our Snow Shader. We are happy to announce the Romanian 3D artist Dan Cristian Baciu as the winner! His final render is above, click the image to view in hi-resolution.

From Dan's own words: "At the beginning I didn't have a clear idea about what I wanted to achive, I just wanted to try the snow shader. I looked at a lot of images with snow and winter scenes, in search for some inspiration. I found 'Maslenitsa', a painting done in 1919 by the russian painter Boris Kustodiev to be really inspiring and I started working on a scene that resembled that painting:

Unfortunately, doing something like that painting proved to be too complex given the time I had to work on this project, so I had to choose something else, something simpler that could be done in the given amount of  time. In the end I found this beautiful photo of these boys playing in the snow so I thought It would be more reasonable to do something like this.

Behind the Scenes

Here are some AOV's (Arbitrary Output Variables) that the snow shader provides where we can visualize the different components of the shading model. Click the images below to see higher resolutions:

Like us, Dan prefers to use Houdini together with Renderman. Here are some helpful screenshots of his workflow with our shaders, as well as rendering from Houdini with Renderman. Click images to enlarge:

Besides using Houdini, the child is modelled in Maya, detailing (snow tracks, footprints) are done in Mudbox, and textures in Photoshop and Gimp.
