Weaver's Wanderings
March 2010

Dear <<First Name>>,
Other than trips to Lancaster, PA for Christmas and St. Louis for Urbana we have been hibernating this winter.  We were fortunate that we did not get as much snow as the mid atlantic states!  :)  It was a cold winter though.  Read on below to get a summary of Urbana and learn about our upcoming missions trip this summer to Guatemala!.

In Memoriam - David W. MacPherson Sr 1940-2010
In memory of David W. MacPherson Sr.
6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8

Dad MacPherson went to be with our Lord on February 27th and memorialized on March 2, 2010. The verse above was how we chose to remember Dad.

Dad had a way of bringing tears to your eyes with his ability to keep a straight face while you were brought to a full out belly laugh by his wit! Hopefully my brother Dave doesn’t mind me stealing his candid memory and sharing it with all of you, but his memory provides a great picture of David W. MacPherson as my fun loving dad.

My brother Dave told us about the time he and Darryl both quite young went with Dad to play golf. Dave started to say to dad and Darryl, “I think I’ll take a shot” but “shot” was not the word he used. Dad didn’t skip a beat or blink an eye, no anger or haranguing. Dad just said, “Well if you have to take one, I hope you do it behind the trees.” I’m sure the three of them were rolling on the green as they enjoyed the rest of their golf game.

I remember Dad taking me to get my learners permit and letting me drive home. Mind you it was December. All was well until got off the highway and slid on a remnant of ice when braking and hit the curbing on the ramp – accident averted. Without a hint of fear and a little laugh in his voice dad says, “So, you think you were going a tad fast?” I glanced over and said, “Yeah” only to find him white as a sheet but smiling as he tried to act casual about it like only dad could do.

Dad taught me a lot over the years. Dad worked beside me mucking out stalls and taught me to drive his van with the horse trailer.  When I joined the print shop softball team he taught me how to keep my eye on the ball so I’d hit it every time. But probably the most unknown thing he taught me was about being faithful in  prayer. I’ll never forget seeing my dad kneel by his bed each night to pray. I praise God for my dad’s faithfulness and the example he set for me.

Dad is greatly missed, but we’ll meet again. Love you dad!

Urbana 2009!
He Dwelt Among Us!  That was the theme for Urbana 2009. See a short summary video here.  It was a great time to take a break from the business of life and focus on God and his calling on our lives.  This was the first Urbana where we did not help lead a group of college students.  There was a group of students that went from Grace Chapel, but we were not leaders of that group.  That really allowed us the opportunity to take stock of where we have been and what we feel God is calling us to next.  This Urbana lived up to expectations.  The worship was awesome!  I can hardly wait for heaven.  The main speakers gave us challenging and engaging talks.  Check out our links section below for links to some of the worship songs and speakers.  The seminars in the afternoon were excellent and allowed us each to customize our experience.  Finally, the Bible manuscript studies in the mornings were engaging and set the stage for the day.

So what did we take away from our time there?  While there are many things, I think the main theme "He Dwelt Among Us" really resonated with us.  We have had many years of fruitful missions mobilization where we have helped people plug into God's global calling on their lives.  In doing this we have taken missions trips all around the globe, but have never dwelled anywhere, or even made a return trip to any locations.  We are feeling that maybe it is time for us to focus our efforts a bit more and find a place to dwell.  This has led us to go back to Tactic, Guatemala where Tim visited in 2006 to work with Impact Ministries this summer.  Read on below for more details.

Missions Trip to Tactic, Guatemala!
In 2006 Tim went down with a team from the Duvall Church to dedicate a church in Manantial (small remote mountain village in central Guatemala) that was built with help from the youth group at the church over the previous two summers.  While we were down there we also got to see what Impact Ministries (www.impactministries.ca) along with Les & Rita Peters are doing through Christian education and discipling of young Guatemalan children in a number of different communities in and around Tactic, Guatemala.  The children’s heart for God and how they sung and prayed with their whole heart gave us hope that even though their physical situation may not be the best they have hope in Jesus. Providing these children an education and spiritual growth gives them and their country hope for their future.  At that time Impact Ministries had many opportunities to expand their program into other towns and villages and were being given land freely if they would establish schools in these towns.  Now four years later they have five complete elementary schools and two other elementary schools in development serving over 1,100 students.  They also have a high school, and medical clinic.  Recently, they have acquired land to build a Bible School, dormitories, church and missions training center.  God has really blessed Impact Ministries as they seek to minister to both the physical and spiritual needs of the Guatemalan people.  So why are we going to Guatemala.  As mentioned above we are looking to find a spot to "dwell".  From what Tim saw and what we can see there is a good deal of overlap in our interests, skills, and abilities, and the ministries of Impact Ministries.  Candy's interest in education fits well with their ministry focus.  They also have needs for short term trip mobilization/organization and fundraising, which Tim could potentially assist.  Right now we are trying to be open and available and using this trip as a vision trip experience to see if this might be where God is calling us to focus.  Please pray for us to hear clearly from God as we move forward. We've entertained other countries and are ernestly seeking God as we explore Guatemala as a place to more consistantly focus our efforts.

 Candy's Update
As Spring begins to move into New England I am slowly refreshed. The warmer weather and smells that come with fresh rain (instead of snow) are a welcome invasion of my personal world right now. I came back from a week in PA for my dad’s funeral and found myself seeking out time alone and the warm weather and an extra day off afforded me the opportunity to go to the barn and sit quietly among the sweet smell of hay and grain with some of God’s best listeners close at hand. Thanks be to God for the times he meets us where we are and comforts us.

I am a bit overwhelmed by the last three months, but starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel – only a glimmer mind you. I began supporting five professors at my work back in October. My dad’s journey started back in November. Tim & I attended Urbana in December. January was full of snow and lots of work. And February ended with the loss of my dear dad.  I returned to work this week exhausted and wondering how God would meet my needs right now.

To my never ending amazement God meets needs each day for me. I went back to work this past week ready to ask for a reprieve from my professor load and my AO told me that the gal I was subbing for will returning the following week, so now I support three professors. Dad’s journey took a toll, but his peace is now mine and daily I turn to God due to the challenges of intermittent sorrow. Urbana seems like it was a long time ago, but the lessons learned are emerging in our plans to go to Guatemala in July. And  yes… finally… no more snow and ice until next year, so back to horseback riding again. I pray the Lord blesses you as you face the many things that come about in life as he has blessed me.

 Tim's Update
While I have not been as busy as Candy, my work at MIT has been fairly hectic.  Fortunately, MIT's fundraising efforts have been going fairly well.  Cash coming into the Institute is on track for one of the best years ever.  The only downside is that new three to five year pledges are down 30+%.  This is because people still do not know exactly how the economy will react in the long term, which makes people less willing to make a long term pledge.  I am alo still working on the regional and global outreach taskforce at Grace Chapel.  We recently presented our core values to the church's board.  They had some questions and gave us great guidance on how to further refine them, but largely affirmed the direction the team was taking.  Please continue to pray for guidance as the task force moves forward.

If all goes well I will be traveling with my dad down to Florida for a few days to see a Space Shuttle launch.  Right now we are targeting early April.  I have always been interested in the Space Shuttle and had an opportunity while at Penn State to go and see a launch, which I didn't take advantage of at that time.  So before they retire the fleet later this year, I wanted to make sure I got the opportunity to see a launch!  There is also a possibility that we will get the opportunity to take a few laps around Darlington Raceway on our way down there.  Can anyone say "I feel the need for speed!"  :)

Prayer Partners Needed
We have at different times tried to create an ongoing group of people that would be willing to pray for us on an ongoing basis.  As we look to the future we realize that we really need to make a concerted effort to make that happen.  If you would like to receive more frequent (as praises and prayer needs arise) short updates with prayer and praise items please click here to be added to our prayer partner list.
