From there, the first International Surfing Day commenced with 16 domestic events and one international activation. Founded eight years ago, International Surfing Day (ISD) unites surfers from around the world in celebration of the sport of surfing. In keeping with tradition of this annual holiday, surfers not only paddle out, but they also do their part to give back to the world’s oceans, waves and beaches through various organized events such as cleanups and restoration projects hosted by the Surfrider Foundation.

OCEAN FRIENDLY GARDENS

Urban runoff is often the primary source of ocean pollution. The Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG) Program educates and assists people in creating landscapes that utilize native plants, permeable groundcovers and water retention features to prevent urban runoff, create wildlife habitat and design beautiful spaces. Vegetable gardens can be OFGs, too, as long as they "apply CPR."Surfrider Foundation Ocean Friendly Gardens Contact Jennifer, our OFG Chair, for more information on how you can get involved!

RISE ABOVE PLASTICS

Surfrider Foundation Rise Above Plastics Program

Florida generates more than 32 million tons of municipal solid waste annually, almost two tons per resident per year. See what you can do to Rise Above Plastics! Check out our new Florida Campaign website. Rise Above Plastics is designed to eliminate the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics. Contact Jaimie, our RAP Chair, for more information on how you can get involved.  Make sure you checkout our t-shirt design contest - you could win a surfboard!Surfrider Foundation Rise Above Plastics

NOT THE ANSWER

On June 10, the Emerald Coast Chapter was one of the first local volunteer organizations to begin a Gulf Beach Water Quality Monitoring Program in response to the minimal efforts made by state and federal agencies to monitor against the dangers of the BP oil spill.
Not The AnswerLocal surfers and swimmers have suffered from burning eyes and mouths, respiratory problems, nose bleeds and have developed toxic exposure rashes since the spill. They wanted to know what is in the water that might be causing these symptoms. The program provided opportunities for greater local public participation in Gulf beach clean-up efforts with a hands-on educational component. Check it out here!!
