Welcome to Zealandia's monthly e-newsletter.

Kia ora,

WhiteheadWell, the recent temperature drop hasn’t stopped a new species from spending some time in our sanctuary valley – a pūkeko has been sighted at the wetlands! While we would be concerned if a group of them established (they can damage plants as well as kill young birds, reptiles and invertebrates) we think this one will likely move on soon.

Visit us now and look out for mixed groups of feeding whitehead, saddleback, robin and fantail in the bush. These appear to be led by the busy whiteheads and can be wonderful to watch. Listen out for chatter between Tūī Terrace and the dam kākā feeders.

Read on for some interesting news updates including the fantastic show of support we’ve had regarding future governance options (here’s that form). We’ve got some great events and offers coming up too.

Nāku noa,

Lauren and the Zealandia team.

Here’s some advice for those making those crucial oral submissions as well – something we strongly urge you to do if you can.

Deadline for submissions: 5pm Friday 18th May (oral submissions run 21-24 May).

Pam Fuller, our Guide and Host Convenor, is retiring after 19 years of both paid and volunteer duty in the valley. But don’t buy her a book token! Together with Des Smith, who’s hosting a garden tour fundraiser on 13 May, she’s hoping to raise $1,500 for new Zealandia flora signage. More…
