During the past year, SWU students, faculty and staff viewed 53,800 full-text journal articles using the Rickman Library databases. These databases provide access to nearly 13,000 unique journal titles, with even more to come in July.

SWU names Mauldin Student Teacher of Year
Southern Wesleyan University President Dr. Todd Voss congratulates Kristen Mauldin, who was named Student Teacher of the Year during honors convocation April 24 at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. Mauldin is an early childhood education major from Liberty who graduated in December. The university recognized its top students during the convocation.




Grad to teach in Namibia
Stephanie Sestito, a recent graduate of Southern Wesleyan University, will travel to Namibia later this summer to start a 27-month assignment as a science teacher. She was invited by the Peace Corps, which is responding to a shortage of qualified math and science teachers and working to counteract the East African nation’s 40 percent dropout rate. Sestito graduated in May with a bachelor of science degree in biology. Follow her blog for details.



Home educators bring Austen classic to life
Students who are members of Easley Home Educators rehearse at Folger Fine Arts Auditorium as they prepare for their production of Jane Austen's classic story, "Pride and Prejudice." The group came together for a week at Southern Wesleyan University’s campus in Central to rehearse and present two performances, May 18 and 19. This year’s production involved students in grades 9-12. Pride and Prejudice follows main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in 19th Century English society.



SWU Charleston location recognized for support to community
Trident United Way expressed thanks to Southern Wesleyan University for their continuing service to the community. The university has been providing meeting space at their Charleston location to the local United Way agency as they complete building renovations.  “The quality, regular availability and geographic convenience of the space, coupled with the ongoing support you and your staff have provided has been invaluable,” said Christopher F. Kerrigan, president and CEO of Trident United Way in a letter recognizing SWU’s service. Kerrigan commented that the donation of space helped them to minimize operational expenses and better dedicate resources to serving Lowcountry residents.

Open House
Southern Wesleyan’s Charleston location is gearing up for Open House, which takes place May 28 – May 31, 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. For details, go to swu.edu/openhouse.


Alumna completes nursing program
Shauna Jones, alumna of CWC (SWU) and graduate of the Clemson University nursing program recently completed her MSN-INF from University of Phoenix. She has been with the Greenville Hospital System for 12 years and has spent the last seven years as a Nursing I/S Systems Coordinator, or nursing informaticist, for the system. Her primary role is liaison for the nursing department to the Information Services department at GHS.


Thompson named L.E.A.R.N. officer
Leigh Thomson, Admissions Coordinator from Charleston, was recently elected treasurer of L.E.A.R.N. (Lowcountry Education Admissions Representatives Network). The non-profit organization was founded in 1991 in Charleston and is comprised of 17 regionally accredited higher education institutions and offers educational events for employers and organizations. The network seeks to provide information to the local community about non-traditional college opportunities.
