Phakama placement opportunities May to September 2012
Project Phakama UK
Phakama have a number of placement opportunities throughout our Velela! (Pop Up Festival) in June 2012 and beyond. Working closely with QMUL Department of Drama, we will deliver an international participatory arts festival during a 2-week creative residency for young people and emerging artists between 16 to 30 June.
Velela! will embrace experimentation, participatory processes, public performances, debate and intercultural creative dialogues in partnership with young people, artists with a proven track record in participatory practice, international and national partners and organisations based in East London. 
 
We have placements within the following projects:
 
A) Message in a Bottle – International Production Assistant Placement X 4
This project enables young people from seven European organisations to investigate, creatively and practically, how water (or the lack of it) impacts on their lives. Water is used as a metaphor for cultural exchange, creative dialogues and environmental learning. The project facilitates the collaboration between young people from the UK, The Basque Country, Poland, Portugal, Ireland and Turkey through virtual dialogue, large-scale international exchange visits leading to public performances and local small-scale performances.
 
Message in a Bottle will be the largest event of the Phakama Pop Up Festival involving 60 international young artists bringing water from their countries to London to create a site-specific, participatory performance around the Regent’s Canal.
 
We are looking for a creative drama/ arts management student/ graduate who can help with the smooth running of our international production.
 
Duties will include assisting with sourcing of props, costumes, helping with staging practicalities and front of house tasks, as well as any other requests from the Artistic Director during the creative process and final performance. This will be a great opportunity for anyone wanting to work in performance production with an international focus.
 
Deadline for applications: Wednesday 6 June at 12pm
Placement dates: 3 to 5 days per week from 11 to 30 June 2012 plus performance dates 27 & 28 June 2012




B) Earth Exchange – Production Assistant Placement
Together with Clayground Collective, Phakama will invite all Pop Up Festival participants to dig clay in their countries and bring it to London. We will create artefacts which will be fired as part of our closing ceremony. The artefacts will be exchanged and then taken to another part of the globe.
 
We are looking for an enthusiastic arts management student/ graduate who can help with the practicalities of the activities and final large-scale ceremonial production.
 
You will assist the Executive Producer with all practical tasks relating to the production of the activities, sourcing materials, overseeing daily schedules, help set-up/de-rig and in the building of the kiln. This placement would be ideal for someone wanting to gain more experience in producing arts projects and installations.
 
Deadline for Applications: 
Wednesday 6 June at 12pm
Placement dates: 2 days per week from 11to 15 June 2012, 3 days per week from 16 to 22 June 2012, all dates between 23 to 29 June 2012.



C) Scratch Space – Production Assistant Placement
Scratch space was designed to give opportunities to young artists to present work-in-progress during the Phakama Pop Up Festival.
 
We are looking for an enthusiastic drama/ arts management student/ graduate who is interested in helping in the production of our three performances as part of our Scratch series.
 
Duties will include managing guest lists/ box office, sourcing materials, overseeing daily schedules, helping set-up and de-rig performances, assist Scratch Space series performers during tech and dress rehearsals.
 
Deadline for Applications:
Wednesday 6 June at 12pm
Placement dates: 3 days week between 11 to16 June 2012 plus event dates: 18 to 23 June 2012



D) Cinema Club – Programming Placement
As part of the Phakama Pop Up Festival we will have a cinema club at the Hitchcock cinema (QMUL) from 21 to 23 June 2012.
 
We are looking for an enthusiastic film studies student/ graduate who is interested in programming to offer two film evenings around the themes of 1) European Identity, and 2) Freedom of Expression.
 
The programming placement will be responsible for sourcing films, writing the programme for each evening and liaising with speakers for after-film discussion when appropriate.

Placement dates: 2/3 days per week from week beginning 11 June 2012 to 20 June 2012 plus event dates – 21, 22 & 23 June 2012.



E) Global Dialogues – Production Assistant
Global Dialogues tests new modules of reflection, evaluation and knowledge sharing. It will combine talks, symposiums, round-table conversations, online debates and after show discussions.
 
As part of the Global Dialogues programme of activities, in partnership with the London Hub / Sustained Theatre, will be a two-day symposium, showcasing and celebrating BAME work in the UK and internationally.
 
We are looking for an arts/ drama/ arts management student who would like to gain experience of running arts events, talks and performances.
 
Duties will include managing guests and speakers, overseeing daily schedules of activities, assisting with performers’ needs, sourcing materials for performances, and helping with any other tasks required by the Executive Producer.

Placement dates: 3 days per week from 11 to 16 June 2012 plus event dates on 20 to 22 & 28 to 29 June 2012



F) Documentation Placements (Edible Garden)
Placement One: May to July 2012/ Placement Two: August-September 2012

We are recruiting for two Documentation Placements to help us in the production of a final publication for the Edible Garden project.
In partnership with the East End Women’s Institute and local daughters, mothers and grandmothers, Project Phakama will be growing an edible garden with and for the whole community. There will be a series of growing, cooking and performance events throughout and the project will culminate in 2012 with a performed Recipe Book.

This is a great opportunity for media, photography, design or publishing students who are keen to learn more about intergenerational projects and gain an insight into working in partnership with other organisations.
 
Duties will include documenting the whole project
(using still, moving images, sound etc), update the project’s blog on a regular basis and develop and maintain an archive of captured material

Placement One Dates:3 days per week from week beginning 11 June  2012 to 29th July 2012
Placement Two Dates:3 days per week from week beginning 30th August 2012 to 30th September 2012




G) Volunteer Gardener (The Edible Garden)
May to September 2012
We are recruiting one Volunteer Gardener to help us run our exciting Edible Garden project.
This is a great opportunity for a gardening enthusiast (with some knowledge and experience), a horticultural or landscape student who wish to put skills into practice, teach others and learn about intergenerational artistic processes.
 
Duties will include developing a planting programme in partnership with the rest of the Edible garden team; overseeing and maintaining all gardening aspects of the project (including participants during gardening activities); ensuring the garden is well kept and that the project’s plans are achieved
