May 21: Takoma Park Council NDAA resolution vote
WE'RE NEARLY THERE! Last week Takoma Park Mayor Bruce Williams put the NDAA/AUMF resolution advocating repeal of the NDAA's indefinite detention provisions on the May 21st City Council agenda. He also scheduled consideration of a resolution advocating reductions in military spending, put forward by our friends in "Fund Our Communities."

The special session in which both resolutions will be considered will come after public comments on other issues, and likely after consideration of other city business. So it may be after 8pm before the NDAA/AUMF and military spending resolutions are considered. One or two statements will be made for either resolution, while fellow resolution advocates stand in support.
Lively Takoma Park forum airs NDAA issues
Impassioned, knowledgeable speakers and a lively, engaged audience of about 35 people — including two Takoma Park city council members, Seth Grimes and Kay Daniels-Cohen — made for a very successful NDAA forum on April 26th at the Takoma Park Community Center.
Eric Bond, editor of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Voice, introduced the forum's two speakers: Takoma Park's own Heather Hurlburt, executive director of the National Security Network, and Shahid Buttar, executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. Hurlburt said, "
Ten years after 9/11 this is a moment to finally communicate to members of Congress that there are other things that the American public cares about than being perceived as weak on terrorism. And we’ve finally reached the moment where we can have that conversation."

Maryland ACLU endorses Takoma Park NDAA resolution
The
American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland has
added its formidable voice to a chorus of support for the MCCRC’s proposed Takoma Park NDAA resolution, joining
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), the
Defending Dissent Foundation, and the
Bill of Rights Defense Committee in endorsing the Takoma Park resolution.
