We've got a full day planned to tickle your two-wheeling fancy, including "Park & Bike" at Newport Grand, Bike Commuter Breakfast, FREE admission at the Breakers, and MUCH more. Don’t miss the release of the bigger and better new edition of the Newport Bicycle Map at our 1pm Press Conference, thanks to the Newport Visitor Center, Newport County Chamber of Commerce and Newport Fed.  All Bike to Work Day activities take place, or start from, Washington Square, our beautiful and historic city center.  See the full schedule at www.bikenewportri.org. Special thanks to sponsors AARP, Newport Bicycle and the Preservation Society of Newport County.

1979’s Favorite Bike Flick:
at the Jane Pickens Theater

The JPT & Bike Newport present Breaking Away at the conclusion of Bike To Work Day - May 18 at 8pm.  A touching, funny coming-of-age story and a compelling sports film, Breaking Away is a delightful way to end the day for Newport and the biking community. Advance tickets here or at Jane Pickens. Portion of proceeds benefit Bike Newport!

After School Bicycling

Two afterschool bicycle programs for middle school students debuted this spring in Newport.  Students from INCASE (Newport County After School Excitement!) and Newport Community School are learning bicycle skills, safety and basic maintenance from instructors Steve Heath of East Bay Met School and Rob Purdy of Newport Bicycle. Both programs take place at the Bike Garage, located at Rogers High School.  The program’s bicycle fleet are donated bicycles refurbished and put to great use.  We hope these are the first of many more school-affiliated bicycle programs for the youth of Newport to come!

Ride of Silence

On Wednesday, May 16, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. In Providence, a Ride of Silence will begin at 6:30PM at the Nelson Fitness Center (Hope and Cushing St), Brown University.  More information in the Press Release.

Liz Drayton of the Opera House and poster project artist Lori Bates hang the Bike to Work Day poster featuring Newport resident Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, photographed by Jason Evans at Newport Bicycle.

The People Behind the Bike to Work Day Poster Project

Keep an eye out for all six posters in the series promoting Bike to Work Day on May 18 in business windows all over town. Plus three huge blowups outside the Opera House in Washington Square. Thanks to our willing subjects for sharing their time and support of bicycling in Newport: Preservation Society Executive Director Trudy Coxe, Salve Regina University’s President Sister Jane Gerety, Newport City Manager Jane Howington, Newport Community Police Officer Jimmy Winters,  Artist Bill Heydt, and US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.  The posters were made possible by the generous donations of photographer Jason Evans and graphic artist Lori Bates. Printing was contributed by Trip Wolfskehl of Screencraft Tileworks.  Thanks to all!  It most definitely takes a village – or a city – coming together to make change.

America’s Cup World Series
June 23 to July 1

Bike Newport is serving on the America’s Cup Host Committee and helping to support more bicycling as a way to reduce car traffic and improve the visitor experience.  Our efforts include mapping and marking recommended routes, establishing bike parking at Fort Adams, and creating centralized bicycling information online.

15 Newporters to be Trained as LCIs

The funds raised at the March "Bike Newport Night" fundraiser are being used to train a cadre of Newporters as League Certified Instructors (LCIs) - experts in safe cycling and road sharing. The training course is administered by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB), based in Washington, DC.  In addition to achieving training in the range of LAB bike safety classes, the instructors can serve as expert resources on best practices for safe road sharing as the city moves forward toward becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community.
