UN increasingly concerned about caste Press Release (May 31, 2012). Following yesterday’s release of the reports on the UN human rights reviews of India and the UK, it is evident that UN member states are increasingly concerned about caste discrimination. For the first time ever, a recommendation on outlawing caste discrimination in the UK was raised, while ten recommendations directly relating to caste were made at the review of India. Consultation on enforcing and amending the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act in India, chalks out future strategies (17-18 May, 2012) The consultation, organised by the National Coalition for Strengthening the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act (NCSPA), recapped and analyzed the interventions made by the Coalition, arrived at a consensus on proposed amendments to the act, and chalked out effective future strategies.

UPR Pakistan: Joint call for adoption of law prohibiting caste discrimination (May 14, 2012) Pakistan will be reviewed on 30 October 2012. On this occasion, Pakistan Dalit Solidarity Network (PDSN) and IDSN have prepared and submitted a stakeholders' report to the OHCHR concerning discrimination against Dalits in Pakistan.

Mass protests in India to reclaim Dalit budgetary rights (May 10, 2012) On 9th of May thousands of Dalits and Adivasis (Tribals) from all over India stormed up to the Parliament in New Delhi to demand their rightful economic share in the state and union budgets. Parliamentarians in India raise their voices for the eradication of manual scavenging
(May 9, 2012) Following a targeted campaign by the National Campaign for Dignity and Eradication of Manual Scavenging and other activists, Indian Parliamentarians are now taking the issue of manual scavenging up in Parliament.

Dalits in Nepal unhappy with the preliminary results of the Constitution drafting process (May 9, 2012) Nepal  Dalits have been protesting the preliminary results of the constitution drafting process because Dalit concerns have not been duly reflected in the proposed preliminary draft. The Government have now once again postponed the release of the draft constitution till later this year.

Caste blocks rehabilitation of Nepal's sex workers
(May 7, 2012 – IPS news article) Social activists say that attempts to rehabilitate sex workers in Nepal call for special efforts to uplift the Badi, a Hindu caste that has for centuries been associated with prostitution.

Motion passed in Dutch Parliament on full supply chain transparency in India's garment industry, following report highlighting Dalits in bonded labour (9 May, 2012) The motion has been adopted in the wake of the report ‘Maid in India’ by SOMO and the India Committee of the Netherlands. Dalits are specifically mentioned.

Dalits in Bangladesh demand budgetary allocations (May 5, 2012) Bangladesh Dalit Excluded Rights Movement (BDERM) demanded specific allocation for the development of Dalit communities, in the upcoming National Budget.
