Our oldest daughter Laura and her husband Eric just celebrated their first anniversary in April. Right after they got married last year it suddenly dawned on me that I not only had a new son-in-law but also a granddog, Cooper shown on the right.
A month ago a stray dog showed up at their house in South Carolina and after going thru all the proper channels and not finding the owner I now have a second granddog, Tucker. The beauty of it all is that the two dogs instantly bonded, play well together, share toys and cuddle up at night to sleep - too cute!I just got back from

Invited Back To Breckenridge Watercolor Collage WorkshopAArtNew Ar Watercolor on Rice Paper
Last month I taught a one day workshop in Castle Rock, CO where we painted watercolor on Masa rice paper. I love using different painting surfaces that allow the watercolor to react in unexpected ways. The masa paper is first soaked in water, then crinkled up and glued to 140 lb paper. The paint is applied while the paper is still wet, allowing it to settle in to the cracks and crevices creating a soft, textured look to the painting. Featured from my Etsy Shop
I think sunflowers are my favorite flower to paint. I love their warm colors, happy faces and petals going every which way. For this painting I applied a coat of gesso to the 140 lb watercolor paper first to allow the colors to stay bright and the paint to run and drip, creating fun texture. It is nice to switch things up artistically every once and a while - use a different painting surface, add mixed media or try a new subject - just go for it and see what happens!

New Palette and Paints
It is easy to get in a rut using the same old colors year after year. It is also easy to let your palette become one big mess with new colors squeezed in wherever you can fit them, old colors cracked and neglected. I recently treated myself to a brand new palette and fresh paint I could put in to each well. Starting at the upper left I used Purssian Blue, Shadow, Raw Violet Umber, Quin Purple, Rose Madder, Opera, Flamingo Pink and Juan Brilliant, Cherry Red, Red Hot Mama, Halloween Orange and New Gamboge, Cad Yellow, Raw Sienna, Old Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Earthen Green, Spring Green, Hooker's Green, Phthalo Green, June Bug, Turquoise, Manganese and Phtalo Blue and Ultra Marine Blue. Some old favorites and some fun, new colors to try. I use American Journey paints from Cheap Joe's which explains some of the creative color names. Can't wait to dive right in and start painting - or maybe I will just admire my new palette for a while! - can't wait to dive in !!and Phthalo Blue, and UltramatStarting at the upper left cornerStar into each well. and then squeezed fresh, beautiful colors . New Home
CITY BLUES is one of my favorite paintings so I am happy to see it has a new home in Vermont. I had challenged myself to paint in a more abstract manner, applying cool colors to create an interesting composition and then deciding to pull out shapes of buildings using negative painting. It was one of those times when everything seemed to gel creatively!

Art Auctions
Barns are another favorite painting subject and I was inspired to paint this after visiting our son in Vermont last month where the countryside is dotted with wonderful farms. I love the red barn against the bright greens of the trees and field.

Take an unfinished painting and use doilies as stencils to stretch your creativity and add interest to the composition - very fun!
