Denise Lee Yohn - Brand as Business™ Brief

06.12.12 vol 047

Hello Friends and Colleagues!

"You must lead yourself before you can lead others."

I've had the privilege of working with some fantastic leaders and I've always found that the most effective leaders of others are those who lead themselves well. That's why I was excited to read the piece by author and management advisor Michael Watkins in this month's Harvard Business Review and use it as fodder for this month's brief:

-  Watkins describes the seven “seismic shifts” that executives must navigate when they first become an enterprise leader. In a bit called Leadership Shifts, I call out the three most critical – and the most challenging.

-  I revisited Watkins seminal book, The First 90 Days (a must-read for any leader!), and assembled the chart, What Business Are You Leading?  It outlines four types of businesses and the challenges of each -- plus how to leverage your brand internally to address those challenges.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on leading yourself and leading your brand -- please reach out.

Leadership Shifts

In this month’s Harvard Business Review, Michael Watkins addresses the challenges a function head faces when he or she first becomes an enterprise leader.  Watkins outlines seven “seismic shifts” that executives must navigate including shifting from specialist to generalist and from tactician to strategist.

In my own leadership experiences as well as observing and coaching others, I’ve found three of these shifts to be the most critical – and the most challenging.

What Business Are You Leading?

In his seminal book, The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels, Watkins provides a road map for taking charge in the early months of a new job.  He lays out the four broad types of business situations that new leaders face: start-up, turnaround, realignment, and sustaining success.

There are ways to use your brand in each situation, since your brand is a powerful tool for managing and growing your business.  In the following chart, I outline the challenges of each business situation and the way to leverage your brand internally to address those challenges.  This isn't a complete description of the challenges, nor of the "brand as business" management approach, but I hope it sparks some thoughts for you.
