Player Profile - Alassin Sane
After five years of leadership on and off the track for the Atlanta Rollergirls, Alassin Sane is taking her skills and her passion for derby to the international level, as she recently started her two-year term as
President of the WFTDA. The WFTDA is the international governing body for women’s flat track roller derby, and a membership organization facilitating collaboration and network between derby leagues. The organization sets standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determines guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues.
While this is Lass' first time holding elected office within the WFTDA, she's no stranger to working within the organization. Her involvement began as a member of the sanctioning committee, where she processed team charters submitted to the WFTDA. Following that position, she worked as a league mentor, guiding up-and-coming
WFTDA apprentice leagues through the
membership procedures. Despite her extensive experience working with WFTDA, Lass was initially surprised by her nomination for president. In the course of consulting with some of the prominent figures in the organization, however, her interest and excitement grew, and she enthusiastically accepted the nomination.
In preparing to take on this responsibility, Lass has been even more thoughtful about listening to the
leagues that comprise the organization: "I really think that what makes our organization successful is that we are run and driven by what our members want. I want to make sure that as President I keep that in mind." Lass's main goal is simply to ensure that the WFTDA continues to flourish. She notes that she's looking forward to opportunities to "work with tons of amazing people who share the same passion that [she] has for roller derby."
