Town Council Adopts Resolution Opposing the Proposed Dominion North Carolina Power Rate Increase
At its regular meeting on Thursday, July 5, 2012, the Duck Town Council approved a resolution opposing a proposed rate increase by Dominion North Carolina Power (DNCP).  On March 30, 2012, DNCP submitted an application to the North Carolina Utilities Commission to increase rates in North Carolina overall by 19.11%  including a 21% increase for residential customers.  DNCP serves 120,000 customers in North Carolina, including those located on the Outer Banks.  DNCP states in its application that it has not increased base rates (excluding fuel charge increases) since 1993, and that the increases are need to continue to provide reliable service by maintaining and upgrading facilities.  The 21% rate increase would increase average monthly bill of a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity from $104 to $119, according to DNCP.

A hearing on the proposed rate increase will be held in Manteo on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dare County Governmental Facilities.  Written comments may be sent to Mr. Robert Gruber, Executive Director, Public Staff - NC Utilities Commission, 4326 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4326 and/or The Honorable Roy Cooper, Attorney General of North Carolina, c/o Utilities Division, 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC  27699-9001.  Information on the proposed rate increase can be found at the Dominion North Carolina Site and the North Carolina Utilities Commission website.
