Sure steaks and fish are great on the grill, but how about peaches, nectarines, eggplant, zuchinis and summer squash, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and all those delicious sweet fruits like figs and yes, strawberries...
The larger the fruit, the easier it is to grill. When you cut fruit to grill, keep in mind the size of your cooking grates and make sure the fruit is large enough that it won't fall through. Even if your finished dish calls for smaller pieces of fruit it's much easier to chop the fruit after it is grilled. That doesn't mean you can't grill smaller fruits like figs, strawberries, and apricots. These fruits are best grilled whole (in the case of strawberries) or cut in half (for figs and apricots) and can be set directly on the cooking grates or skewered for kabobs. Use double-prong skewers or two bamboo skewers so the fruit doesn't spin around as you grill it. With peaches and nectarines it is always best to select fruit that is not too ripe so it won't fall apart. Grilling also brings out the sugars in the fruit and caramelizes them for a nice brown grilled coating. Rare, medium, or well done it's all delicious!

"I grew up in Peoria, Illinois watching my dad, Gene Rayford, cooking all things BBQ. The taste of BBQ became a part of every important family gathering on both sides of our family. Fat Daddy's grew out of my wanting to share this with my family and watching it overflow to our friends and their families. In 2005 I began to cook for passersby out in front of our family home in El Cerrito. People would drive by and stop to see what was cooking. Since then I have worked to perfect the rubs I use and develop my own unique style of BBQ to share with the East Bay community."
We'll start the morning off with the Wildcat Fiddlers from 10-11 and then turn the party over to the Mule Trio of Patty Hammond on bass, Macy Blackman on keyboard & trumpet with Kelvin Lewis on drums and vocals. These guys are a perennial favorite at our market and will keep it turned up until the market closes at 2:00 p.m.
