  Champagne Reception, Mansion House

Sarah Jackson

Welcome to our August newsletter, at what is a very exciting time for Classics for All. Last month, a champagne reception for donors, supporters and patrons of Classics for All was hosted by the Rt. Hon. the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman David Wootton, in the sumptuous surroundings of the Mansion House, the Lord Mayor’s residence. Nearly 120 supporters attended to hear a key speech by the Lord Mayor, who gave personal insight into the value of Classics in the 21st century, while Michael Fallon MP delivered a special message of support from Michael Gove MP, the Secretary of State for Education. Other speakers included: Classics teacher Jane Maguire, who leads a Classics for All project in Norfolk which enables 80 children attending state schools in the local area to begin learning Latin; Professor Paul Cartledge, A. G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture at University of Cambridge; and the acclaimed television historian and author, Bettany Hughes.

Overall, this was a very special evening, and on behalf of the Trustees, I would like to offer our appreciation and thanks to the Lord Mayor himself, whose extremely generous support made the event possible.

Message from Michael Gove MP,

  Michael Fallon
Michael Fallon MP, who is one of our Honorary Patrons, delivered this message on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education:

It’s fantastic news that more and more state schools are offering pupils the chance to study Latin. The Classics offer students a chance to commune with some of the finest minds of all time, intellectual training of the most rigorous kind and endless pleasure throughout life. It must also be noted that employers value the logical thinking, clear writing and enquiring nature shown by students who choose to study the Classics. Which is why I wish Classics for All every success.

The Lord Mayor of the City of London   Lord Mayor
As Lord Mayor, I am delighted to be able to support Classics for All. As a student of Classics, both at grammar school in Bradford and then at Jesus College, Cambridge, I am naturally delighted that three of my children followed in my footsteps and read Classics at University. I, like they, are fully aware of how enjoyable and rewarding it is as well as the significant career benefits its study can bring. I am very keen to support Classics for All in continuing the promotion of Classics for all and not just the few. The spreading of Classics in state schools is very important and everyone should have access – Classics for All. Vos saluto!

David Wootton, The Rt. Hon. the Lord Mayor of the City of London

  Olympiad Reflection by

Swifter, Higher, More Strongly (not 'Stronger') - so goes the motto of the modern, supposedly revived, Olympic Games movement. But isn't it a bit suspicious that the motto is in Latin, not Greek? Indeed, it is - or should be - and of course from the moment of the lighting of the torch at Olympia, through to the opening ceremony and on to the formal closure of the games, the modern Olympics bear really very little resemblance indeed to their supposed ancient Greek model. But then isn't that a model for how Classics has survived and is alive and kicking still in 2012? The same, only different. Old but new every time. A tradition that is constantly re-invented. Floreant Classics!

Maxwell SinghThe grants we offer each year are funded by donations from supporters of Classics; we receive no state funding. All recipients of this newsletter are therefore invited to play a role in ensuring that the learning and teaching of Classical subjects reach a new generation.

One of our funded projects for 2012 is at King George V College, Southport, Merseyside. The College currently runs GCSE and A level courses in Classical Civilisation, Ancient History and Archaeology and GCSE courses in Classical Greek and Latin. It needs support over three years to help introduce Classics courses in two local state schools that currently have no provision - Greenbank High School, which is a non-selective girls’ school; and Stanley High School, a mixed comprehensive in the city. Specifically, work will include (i) the introduction of an entry-level OCR course in Latin for 20 pupils in Year 9, as well as an after-school GCSE short course in Ancient History at Greenbank School, and (ii) an after-school club in Ancient History at Stanley High School.

Since donors should have a chance to see for themselves what we are doing in schools, a Trustee has funded a short video, presented by Bettany Hughes, on the projects we fund, and you can watch it on our website at www.classicsforall.org.uk. Our Communications Director Lorna Bower, has over twenty-five years of experience of visual media production with the BBC, which enabled us to create a high-quality, professionally made film that has been very well-received by the Classics community.

Your support for our projects will, without a doubt, change someone’s life, and encourage today’s pupils to make their own contribution one day to the future of Classics in state schools.

Details of all of the projects we have funded in 2011 and 2012, as well as our easy-to-use donation forms, can also be found on the website.
