48th Ward Construction Updates

48th Ward CTA Construction Updates

Dear Neighbor,

Our Ward is fully in the throes of construction on our Red Line stations. CTA's Red Ahead project began on Thorndale last Friday, August 17 and starts on Argyle this Friday, August 24, causing the stations to temporarily close for six weeks. In addition to station closures, there are full street closures taking place on many of these streets to accommodate for the track, platform and viaduct work.  Below is important information pertaining to Argyle, Thorndale, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr construction. Please plan ahead when traveling to or around these streets, especially over weekends.

Please join me and the CTA on Monday, August 27 at 6:00pm at Goudy School Cafeteria (5120 N. Winthrop, but please enter off of Winona) for a community meeting to discuss the construction at Berwyn and Argyle stations. In addition to the planned stationhouse, track and viaduct work, these stations' viaduct columns will be rebuilt. The CTA will make a presentation to residents and business owners and will answer any questions or concerns.

Argyle CTA Temporarily Closing

The next station to undergo work is Argyle, which will be closed for six weeks starting on Friday, August 24 at 10:00pm and lasting until Friday, October 5 at 10:00pm. Consequently, there will be full street closures on Argyle from Broadway to Winthrop during the weekends.

Station
The station will be closing this Friday, August 24 at 10:00pm. It will be closed for 6 weeks and will re-open around 10:00pm on Friday, October 5 .During this time, we are encouraging riders to use Berwyn or Lawrence.

The Street
During construction, the CTA will need to use Argyle to stage equipment and perform viaduct and track work. This will result in full street closures on Argyle from Broadway to Winthrop every week (for the full 6 weeks) from Thursday at 8am to Monday at 12pm. I have requested that they keep access open up to the north/south alley west of the viaduct in order to ensure access for business deliveries and turn-around traffic. Due to safety reasons, there are two weekends in particular where this will be impossible because there will be a crane staged on the street. These weekends are Thursday 8/30 - Monday 9/3 and Thursday 9/20 - Monday 9/24. They will try to keep alley access open on the other weekends since the work will be less intensive. The curb lane on both sides of the street will be closed from August 24 - October 4.

Once the station reopens, the CTA will continue finishing work to the viaduct which may cause additional street closures. My office will keep the community informed of any changes via the Weekly Newsletter.

Thorndale CTA Temporarily Closing

Station
The station closed last Friday, August 17 at 10:00pm. It will be closed for 6 weeks and will re-open around 10:00pm on Friday, September 28. During this time, we are encouraging riders to use Granville or Bryn Mawr.

The Street
During construction, the CTA will need to use Thorndale to stage equipment and perform viaduct and track work. This will result in full street closures on Thorndale from Broadway to Winthrop every week (for the full 6 weeks) from Thursday at 8am to Monday at 12pm. I have requested that they keep access open up to the north/south alley west of the viaduct in order to ensure access to the Armory parking lot to the south and businesses to the north. Due to safety reasons, there are two weekends in particular where this will be impossible because there will be a crane staged on the street. These weekends are Thursday 8/23 - Monday 8/27 and Thursday 8/30 - Monday 9/3. They will try to keep alley access open on the other weekends since the work will be less intensive.
The curb lane on both sides of the street will be closed from August 17 - September 29.

Once the station reopens, the CTA will continue finishing work to the viaduct which may cause additional street closures. My office will keep the community informed of any changes via the Weekly Newsletter.

Bryn Mawr Street Closure

The Bryn Mawr station will receive Station Renewal work this Fall which will include a deep cleaning of the station and auxiliary exit, new light fixtures, new wall finishes, replacement of station doors and rotogates, new heaters, pigeon abatement and new signs. The station will not close down to riders. However, the street will be closed for two weekends to accommodate this work.

Bryn Mawr from Broadway to Winthrop will have a full street closure this weekend Friday August 24 at 8am - Monday August 27 at 12pm. The second weekend will be Friday October 19 at 8am - Monday October 22 at 12pm.

Berwyn Street Work

Although the Berwyn station will not close until Friday, October 5, the CTA is getting a head start on the viaduct work. There will be a single lane closure on Berwyn from now until October 5 affecting only the west bound traffic off WinthropThere will be shoring towers to support parts of the viaduct and the concrete framework during these repairs which will limit the ability to maintain traffic in both directions.  This work is scheduled now until the station closure October 5.

Full street closures will need to take place Thursday 8/30 at 8am - Monday 9/3 at 12pm and Thursday, September 6 at 8am - Monday, September 10 at 12pm

Slow Zone Work and Weekend Ride Backs

The CTA's Red Ahead project has been awarded an additional 15 million dollars to work on the north red line's "slow zones." Therefore, the CTA will be performing extensive track work between stations on the weekends. This will result in weekend ride backs, running trains express to Loyola (for north bound riders) or Sheridan (for south bound riders) and "riding back" to your station destination.

Work will take place this weekend Friday, August 24 at 10pm - Monday August 27 at 4am. During this time, Howard-bound trains will not stop at Wilson, Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, Bryn Mawr, or Granville stations.

The CTA is recommending for service to these stations, take a Howard-bound train to the Loyola and transfer to a 95th-bound train. For service from these stations, take a 95th-bound train to Sheridan and transfer to a Howard-bound train.
