Fall 2012, Vol. 2, Issue 1

I am pleased to present the fifth issue of The District Digest, an online newsletter produced by the Sunnyvale School District. Articles are published online at http://sesd-district-digest.org/; in general, stories from the past three months are collected for each emailed "digest".

In the 2012-2013 school year, we will publish the District Digest in September, December, March and June (on the first school day on or after the first of the month); article submissions are welcome, please submit at least 10 days before each publishing date (info@sesd-district-digest.org).

Superintendent's Back to School Letter
While I look forward to this fall, we begin yet another school year in challenging times. Although improving, the California economy continues to struggle. The funding our state can provide to its public schools is still lower than the level provided for the 2008-09 school year and among the lowest funding levels in the country. In these times, I think it is important to look at our Sunnyvale schools to gauge how we are meeting these challenges. [Read more]

New District Office and School Administrators Joining Sunnyvale School District
Following recent leadership announcements at Bishop, Ellis and Colombia Middle, Dr. Benjamin Picard, Superintendent of Schools, announced three new administrator assignments: Dr. Tasha Dean will serve as Director of Special Education and Student Services for Sunnyvale School District, Edith Mourtos will serve as principal at Cumberland Elementary School, and Allison White will serve as principal at Cherry Chase Elementary School. New and Renovated Facilities Welcome Sunnyvale Students this Fall
New science classrooms and labs for middle school students, new and renovated multi-purpose rooms for elementary school students, and an expanded neighborhood center are just a few construction projects the Sunnyvale School District has been working on and just completed in time for classes this fall. Sunnyvale School District Students Enjoyed Enriching Summer Program
Over 700 Sunnyvale students enjoyed a rich and vibrant learning opportunity this summer through the district’s partnership with the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP).In the elementary summer program for incoming first through fifth grade students, the instructional focus was on improving students’ literacy and numeracy skills. Bishop and Ellis School Leadership Assignments for 2012-2013
To fill vacancies for the 2012-13 school year, Eric Panosian will be transferring to the Principal position at Ellis Elementary School. Suzanne Cicala has been appointed Interim Principal of Bishop Elementary School and Christina Ballantyne will be joining Columbia Middle School serving as Assistant Principal.

Edwin Javius Addresses District Staff at Opening Day Assembly
On August 20, Edwin Javius, founder, president, and CEO of EdEquity Inc., an educational consultant firm specializing in assisting educators in closing the achievement gap in their students, gave an entertaining and inspiring keynote address to a standing-room only crowd of teachers and staff at Bishop Elementary School’s auditorium. Sunnyvale School District Offers Transitional Kindergarten this Fall
Did you know the entry date for kindergarten has changed in California? Beginning this year, children must be 5-years-old by November 1st (rather than December 2nd) to enroll in kindergarten. However, incoming students with November birth dates will still attend school. They will be enrolled as “Transitional Kindergarteners”. [Read more]
