Spotlight continues on employee transitions
Continuing to keep you informed about the many personnel changes at SWU, our spotlight this week highlights multiple departments experiencing transitions.

Kristi Cabrera began employment on July 1 in the new position of secretary to the dean of the School of Business. Cabrera received her BA in TESOL (teaching of English to speakers of other languages) at IWU. Prior to her new assignment, she was an academic coordinator at Ohio Christian University.

Andria Carpenter joined the Center for Transformational Learning (CTL) on July 16 in the new position of learning management system (LMS) administrator. Carpenter received her associate’s degree in Office Systems Technology from Tri-County Tech, her bachelor’s degree in human services and resources from Anderson University (SC), and is currently pursuing her MA in practical ministry from Erskine Theological Seminary.  She previously served as the registrar for Erskine Seminary, the systems database administrator at Anderson and systems analyst at Ogletree law firm.

Also new to CTL is Dr. Gloria Sellers who was appointed as faculty development coordinator June 18. Sellers earned her BA in elementary and special education from Michigan State University, her M.Ed. in instructional technology from Wayne State University and her Ph.D. in anthropology (business) from Wayne State. Most recently, she served as an adjunct instructor at USC Upstate, Spartanburg Community College, Greenville Tech and Virginia College. Her professional experience includes director of the Center for the Study of Global Leadership and Understanding at Lawrence Technological University and as an administrator at General Motors in Detroit.

James Owens has also joined CTL as educational resources assistant (June 25). James received his AS in electronics engineering technology from Tri-County Tech and recently retired, after a long career, from Duke Energy (ONS) where he served as nuclear procedure writer.

Deborah Eller joined the Counseling and Health Center as secretary on July 30. Eller has significant experience in customer service and as an administrative assistant gained while working for First Citizens Bank, the School District of Pickens County and, most recently, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Returning to SWU, this time as a full-time employee, is Casey Gadsby. Prior to her new appointment (on July 9) as administrative assistant to the provost and AVP for planning and assessment, Gadsby served as SWU’s lab and safety coordinator for the Science division. She completed her BS in biology from Westminster College.

Debra Nodine began employment on June 25 in the new role of adjunct faculty recruitment coordinator. Nodine received her BS in special education from University of Maine-Farmington and her MA in education from SWU. With extensive classroom experience in elementary education, she made the transition to department head for the Center for Child Care Career Development in Greenville and, most recently, was program coordinator and Instructor at Tri-County Tech.

Thomas Parham joined the IT team as computer support specialist 1 on July 1. Parham completed his AS in business at SWU and is expecting to graduate with his BSBA in May 2013. He has worked at Westpoint Stevens as equipment operator, as diesel mechanic at Cromer Food Service and, prior to his newest assignment, worked for the City of Clemson in maintenance.

While SWU conducts a search for a database administrator, Randy Jacobs will serve as interim database administrator for SWU’s IT department. Jacobs transferred from (what was then called) Marketing and Enrollment as data analyst coordinator in early May to serve as computer support specialist 2. He holds a B.A. in computer science-business and has a strong background in data management and programming.

Employees Recognition Dinner – RSVP NOW!
Stop what you’re doing and RSVP now as tomorrow is the deadline to reserve your seats for the Employees Recognition Dinner scheduled for Tuesday, August 14. Plan on bringing your favorite cowboy or cow gal to our Western Roundup. And, yes, Western wear is completely appropriate attire for this event. Besides some great grub--courtesy of our new dining services provider, Pioneer — many of your colleagues will be recognized for reaching years of service milestones.  We’ll also be welcoming our “tenderfoot” employees (that’s "new" in Western slang).  And Trailboss Voss will be sharing some words about this past year and the new academic year. RSVP by emailing dfrost@swu.edu

Fundraising policy
This is a reminder that the university has a policy that states “all SWU fundraisers must be approved by the Development Office before any solicitations may be made.” There is a form to fill out on the s drive for your convenience. It can be found in the employees (S:) drive as "Fund Raising Approval Form." Please call Mary Costello in the Development Office at extension 5014 if you have any questions.

The Staff Council will meet at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, in room 0-126 in Rickman Library (regional staff can join by videoconference). On Wednesday, Aug. 15, Smith will share briefly with the faculty at the beginning of faculty retreat in Newton-Hobson.
