New college students face anxiety, excitement
From the time they first arrive on campus, new college students experience a mixture of emotions – the excitement of new experiences mixed with fear of the unknown. Southern Wesleyan University staff, students and volunteers do their part to take away at least some of the anxiety experienced by new students and their families – from simply lending a hand as they move in to being a mentor, available for guidance. Rouse publishes in quarterly
Dr. Susan Rouse, professor of biology, has been working the last couple of years on a masters in bioethics at Trinity International University beyond her Ph.D. Her publication, entitled “Professional Autonomy in Medicine - Defending the Right of Conscience in Health Care Beyond the Right to Religious Freedom,” was published in the May 2012 issue of the Linacre Quarterly. The article explores how the right of health care professionals to conscientiously object to any procedure that they deem as morally illicit or potentially harmful to their patient is currently under severe scrutiny.

Frazier presents at IABPAD Conference
Dr. John Frazier, professor of business, presented his paper entitled “Using a Single Product Cost Function to Predict Economies of Scale in College Athletic Departments:  The Case of Private Four Year Institutions” at the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines  (IABPAD) conference in Orlando, Fla. The paper received a research award at the conference and was subsequently printed in the International Journal of Business and Economic Perspectives Spring 2012 Volume. The study examined 578 private four-year schools and determined that there are indeed economies of scale present in athletic departments within these colleges and universities.

Street Fair
Annually, Southern Wesleyan University hosts Street Fair, a welcome back event for students at the square on the campus in Central. How Can You Make a Difference?
As you know by now, SWU is partnering with the United Way of Pickens County to help alleviate the existence of hunger, homelessness and poverty in Pickens County. You don’t have to walk or drive far from our campus to see the impact that these issues have on our neighbors. As participants in the Pacesetter Campaign, Southern Wesleyan University, along with a handful of other area companies, is currently conducting a “pre-campaign” blitz with the goal of doubling the number of participants (donors) and increasing the dollar amount raised by 20 percent – all by September 10. This blitz will help set the tone for our year-long campaign which will include at least one service project and one university-wide fundraiser. We’re very excited about one proposed service project that we will tell you more about in the weeks to come. Please prayerfully consider a one-time gift or payroll-deduction to United Way of Pickens County. Click here for a Pledge Form, Individual Donor Choice Form and informational brochure.

Payroll deduction can benefit students
As we start the fall semester, now is a great time to support the students by a payroll deduction to the Annual Promise Fund. The “Promise” is a prayerful challenge to do whatever we can to help students with financial need. The employee goal is $40,000. Prayerfully consider helping move SWU forward this fiscal year financially by filling out this form and returning it to Mary Costello in the development office. In addition to helping students, there are exciting projects going on that benefit from your support; the NCAA initiative; Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center; the Golf practice driving range and those one-of-a-kind gifts listed in the catalog of needs. Call or email Mary Costello with any questions you may have at mcostello@swu.edu, extension 5014.

Chapel Checkers needed
The Spiritual Life office needs faculty and staff members to take attendance in chapel. This is open to any employee who would be willing and available to help. There is a need of five people to help scan in students on Mondays and five people for Wednesdays. They are also looking for four people to fill in as needed for both Monday and Wednesday. Especially appreciated are employees who can sign up for the whole semester – Mondays, Wednesdays, or both. They also need four people to help during special chapel events other than regular chapel days and times. Click here for the form or e-mail Fran Finch at ffinch@swu.edu with your response by August 20.
