Just in Time for a New School Year! TACSEI's New Backpack Series
 The Backpack Connection Series was created by TACSEI, in collaboration with Pyramid Plus and Bal Swan Children's Center, to provide a way for teachers and parents/caregivers to work together to help young children develop social emotional skills and reduce challenging behavior. The series is divided into four categories: Emotions, Routines & Schedules, Social Skills, and (coming soon!) Addressing Behavior. Teachers may choose to send a handout home in each child’s backpack when a new strategy or skill is introduced to the class. Each Backpack Connection handout provides information that helps parents stay informed about what their child is learning at school and specific ideas on how to use the strategy or skill at home. Several more handouts are coming soon, so be sure to periodically check the Backpack Connection page on the TACSEI website or "Like" TACSEI on Facebook to stay up-to-date on the latest installments.
LEAP Preschool Model Recognized by What Works Clearinghouse

 TACSEI faculty Phil Strain and colleague Ted Bovey have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Studies in a What Works Clearinghouse review/report. Their study found a positive impact after two years of the full LEAP training and support model on the average classroom-level behavior, communication, intellectual, and social outcomes of preschool children. The average effect sizes for all four  domains are statistically significant and substantively important. Visit the What Works Clearinghouse to check out the full report! Also, be sure to watch LEAP Preschool: An Inclusive Model of Early Autism Intervention which is available on the TACSEI website. In this recorded webinar, Phil Strain and Ted Bovey introduce you to the LEAP Preschool Model, an inclusive, evidence-based model for young children with autism that was founded in 1981. The LEAP Model parallels the levels of the Pyramid Model in many ways and similarities between LEAP and Pyramid implementation are briefly outlined. Brand New TACSEI Make and Take
Thoughtful Transitions Reduce Traffic Jams and Challenges
 This three-hour Make and Take workshop provides teachers with tools and strategies to use when teaching children how to transition between activities and places within the early childhood environment. The workshop includes all presentation materials, embedded videos, handouts, and colorful patterns for activities and props. Participants will learn about tools to reduce challenges with transitions, strategies to assist in actively engaging children during transitions, and individualized transition strategies for children in need of additional supports. As a result of implementing these strategies, children are happier moving from place to place, are actively engaged, and know exactly what is expected as they successfully transition. Visualizing Data with Infographics
 As technology enables us to collect more (and hopefully better) data, it becomes increasingly important to present data in clear, engaging, and useful ways. When we present data in ways that engage our stakeholders, they will more likely spend time with the data, consider it more intently, understand it better, and (hopefully!) put the data to use. Toward this end, you have probably noticed an increasing use of infographics, i.e., data visualizations that present complex information quickly and clearly. We see infographics popping up just about everywhere including newspapers, magazines, advertisements, web sites, and social media. When used well with the right data set, infographics can help capture the attention of a wide audience and help them understand your data quickly by presenting it in ways that are clear, engaging, attractive, and aesthetically pleasing. This ability is very important in our efforts to encourage the use of evidence based practices.
The infographic industry is booming and there are many apps available to generate them, ranging in cost from free to very expensive monthly or yearly fees. Below are a handful of applications that are free (or at least offer free options) to help get you started. While I haven’t had the chance to try out all of these apps personally, they have all been recommended by reputable sources – ultimately you’ll be the judge of their value!

About the Centers
 The Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children, (TACSEI) is a five-year grant made possible by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. TACSEI takes the research that shows which practices improve the social-emotional outcomes for young children with, or at risk for, delays or disabilities and creates FREE products and resources to help decision makers, caregivers, and service providers apply these best practices in the work they do every day.
