NoMa Farmers Market: Welcome Takoma Mushrooms!
|
|
Takoma Mushrooms is a family-run operation located in Takoma Park, Maryland. They began cultivating gourmet mushrooms when they found a lack of quality and variety of mushrooms in area grocery stores. They started with oyster mushrooms in their small grow-house and were amazed by the rich texture and flavor of freshly harvested mushrooms. Come discover the flavors of their harvest yourself by visiting the Takoma Mushrooms stand at the NoMa market this Wednesday!
NoMa Farmers Market runs every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the entrance of the NoMa-Gallaudet U metro station (Second and N Streets, NE). All produce and baked goods are fresh and provided by local farmers, right here in the D.C. metro area!
The market is now accepting WIC and EBT.
For details on how to get involved in the market, contact farmersmarket@nomabid.org.
This week’s recipe:
Stuffed Tomatoes with Oyster Mushrooms
4 medium tomatoes
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 pints finely diced oyster mushrooms
½ cup minced onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
½ cup water
¼ cup couscous
2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1. Using a paring knife, remove tops and seeds from tomatoes to create small bowls.
2. Chop tops and seeds; sauté with mushrooms, onion and garlic until all liquid has evaporated.
3. While vegetables and mushrooms are sautéing, bring water to a boil. Stir in couscous, cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Drain.
4. Combine mushroom mixture, couscous, mint, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.
5. Stuff hollowed-out tomatoes with this mixture. Serve warm or chilled.
