Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival

Hey, Jazz&Blues lovers, here we go...gearing it up again for 2013!
7 months have gone by since our great last festival in March (doesn't it feel like an eternity?)....5 months to go to BJBF 2013....time is flying...but we haven't just been hanging out there doing nothin'. Developing new artwork and an attractive sponsor kit (by Fran Hogan and Penny Ripple), working on the new line-up and starting talks with potential sponsors, selecting and purchasing new merchandise, organizing fundraisers etc. kept us pretty busy after a short break after the 2012 festival in March....but now things are starting to come together again, and we've got some great news for ya!

Here's our new flyer for next year's festival:
The line-up is still subject to change at this point in time, and we might have one or two additions....so stay tuned!

If you like exquisite rum - one of the best rums on this planet - you'll be at the right place when coming to our 2013 festival!

No, we're not talking about a rum festival.... but we'll have some extraordinary good stuff available at the 2013 Jazz and Blues Festival! Thanks to a huge donation by Panamonte Brands LLC., makers of The Smoothest Rum On Earth, (and principal sponsor of the 2013 and 2014 festivals) we are able to offer these very special benefits if you decide to become a sponsor:
A donation of $100 will get you benefits worth $75 (a bottle of 108 Over Proof Panama Red, worth $25, a festival pass worth $30, and a commemorative festival tile worth $20, plus preferred seating)
A donation of $750 will get you benefits worth $500 (a bottle of Panamonte XXV Reserva Preciosa, worth $400, two festival passes worth $30 each, two welcome bags worth $10 each, and a commemorative festival tile worth $20, plus reserved VIP seating and exposure on our website, newsletter, festival program and at the festival venue. Please read more details about many more offers in the sponsor kit you can download from our website here!
Note: This exceptionally smooth rum is made in Panama but it's not on the market here! At the present time it is only available in the US and Canada! Treat yourself to something very special, and support the festival at the same time! And if you'd like to know a little bit more that stunning redhead above (she stands for a real person in history)...check it out here!

Our new merchandise has arrived!
Take a look at these items of our new merchandise! A beautiful new mug (it's actually black inside!), a car license plate, bumperstickers and new t-shirts...soon we'll also have new baseball caps and shopping bags, and at the festival we'll also have seat cushions, umbrellas and towels available for your comfort. Not to forget a new, highly decorative commemorative festival tile which will be available soon! This tile is becoming a valuable collectible item so don't fail to get your copy!

Fresh from the burner: A 4 DVD set with the essence of all shows and jam sessions of the 2012 festival is now available!
Memories are made of this:
In our last newsletter we presented a CD with HiLites of the festival produced by our chief videographer John Hampton. Since then John has been working diligently to turn his extensive footage of the festival into a a wonderful, professionally made piece of perpetual memory. 5 hours of great music, shows and lots of happy, happy people for just $20! Mail us or call us to reserve your copy! This set also makes a great Christmas gift! Unfortunately we won't be able to ship it to places outside of Panama for the time being but we'll keep a copy for you to pick it up when you come to the festival next year!

Our Music for Schools program is taking off!

One of the main goals of our festival is to provide funds for improving musical education at local schools. To this end we'll donate all proceeds of the festival to local schools. In May 2012 we handed a cheque of $800 to the Academia Internacional de Boquete to support the school's plan to build a school orchestra. In August 2012, after having received donations from Boquete citizens, we were able to hand another cheque of $350 plus a keyboard, a trumpet and an acoustic guitar over to the school's principals. The school's orchestra is on a good way, and maybe they'll be able to perform at our 2014 festival!

We're always looking for more donations of instruments and/or cash for this program. So, if you have an unused instrument at your home or you want to support the program with cash please shoot us an email or call us!

Festival tickets, sponsor packages and more....
We've kept our ticket prices at $30 for a 2day pass, and $20 for a one-day ticket. Read all about where and how to get your tickets, as well as about the many options of how to contribute to the festival on our website here.

Planning a little vacation from the cold with your festival visit?
We've got loads of information for you about what to do and what to see while you're here in Panama...and there's a LOT to see and do! Check it out on the visitor's information page of our website.

Mark it in your calendars: February 28 until March 3 are the dates of the 2013 festival! Make plans to visit beautiful, tropical Panama, the land between two oceans, and to enjoy a great music festival at the same time!

We'll continue our work to bring good jazz and blues to you, and we'd looooove to see you here next year!

Any suggestions, questions, need more information?
I'll be glad to hear from you and to help you as much as I can. Just shoot me a mail via the contact form on our website by clicking here!

If you like this newsletter please forward it to your friends and ask them to sign up also. Help us to spread the word and to put Panama on the world-wide blues map!

Don't ask what the festival can do for you - ask what you can do for the festival!

Please patronize the sponsors of the 2013 festival. Without them the festival won't happen. Click on the images to learn more about their business....

Our beautiful festival venue - everybody loved it this year so we'll do it there again in 2013! The Greek-style amphitheatre at Valle Escondido, an upscale residential resort is one of the most beautiful places in the country, a perfect place for our festival! For the 2013 the amphitheater will be equipped with a roof to provide protection against the tropical sun and the rain (which is rare at this time of the year but cannot be totally excluded).

Here's a preview of the exciting 2013 line-up we're working on.

Bob Corritore & Taildragger
The one and only legendary Taildragger, a Chicago blues legend, and his longtime friend in the Blues Bob Corritore (harp) have played major festivals all over the world, and we're very happy to have them come to Panama for the first time. Their show will definitely be a highlight of the festival!

The Randy Oxford Band
Randy Oxford plays a wild trombone, and anybody who has ever seen and heard his band in action won't forget it! Their show at our festival will also be their first-ever performance in Central America. We're very proud being able to present these great musicians to the Boquete festival audience!
Brace yourself, Boquete! You'll be blown away!

Andy Egert
Swiss blues award winner Andy Egert loved Panama and Boquete so much that he was dying to come back...so we'll have him back as a special guest playing with Boquete's own Bluesband, the B3!

The Boquete Blues Band (B3)
One of the objectives of the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival is giving local talents a chance to showcase their art in front of a larger audience. The mixed Panamanian/expat B3 have been honing their skills at local venues and festival fundraisers for years, and at the 2012 festival they did a great job backing up Mitch Woods and Johnny Sansone. They'll be backing up Bob Corritore and Taildragger at the 2013 festival, and they'll have their first well-earned own show on the festival stage in 2013, featuring special guest Andy Egert from Switzerland on guitar and harp.

A New Orleans Marching band
Straight from the streets of N'Awlins! The Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival would be nothing without that special N'Awlins flair! Our New Orleans style street parade with the ensuing garden party at the Panamonte Hotel were one of the highlights of the 2012 festival. We have started a new tradition in Boquete, and we'll proudly continue trying to turn Boquete into a little N'Awlins at least for a short time!

Carlos Ubarte quintet
One of the most sought after sax players in Panama! The Boquete audience knows and loves Carlos and his band from previous festival shows. He'll come to Boquete with his quintet this time, and has promised to present a completely new and exciting show!

Ron Hacker
Raw, down&dirty blues from San Francisco. Ron played a great solo show at the 2012 festival but seeing and hearing him play with his band is a totally different treat! For 2013 we'll have him back with his trio, the Hacksaws. Blues can't get much better than this!

Rigoberto Coba Big Band
A native of  our provinicial capital of David, and a professor of music, Rigoberto Coba (sax) put together an 18 piece big band just for our festival. The show was their first public performance, closing the festival with that wonderful big band swing sound! We've been asked many times to get them back for next year. We listened, and so they're already working on their show for 2013!
