From the President

It’s an exciting time for APSAD with some major changes and upgrades for the Society.
The 31st APSAD Conference: Culture of Change is being held 18 - 21 November at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the preliminary program is up on the conference website and the call for Late Breaking Abstracts is out. We are again delighted to have a great range of keynote speakers, as well as a very high standard of oral papers, posters, symposia and workshops. There is a great line up on the Sunday of pre-conference workshops covering a number of topics and there will also be an ASPR workshop – Quikfix – which is the start of a new collaboration between APSAD and Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research (ASPR) conferences, with Professor Steve Allsop running an APSAD workshop at the ASPR Conference in WA in December. Also, just a reminder that all the Sunday pre-conference workshops are free to APSAD Members.

We’re very excited to announce a great new addition to this year’s conference, the Guided Poster Tour, with some of the Keynote Speakers and other key AOD professionals being Tour Guides, there’s more information on this in the newsletter. At last year’s conference in Hobart I had the pleasure of presenting Professor David Kavanagh with the APSAD Award for Excellence in Science and Research Senior Scientist Award, and the Early Career Award to Dr Suzanne Nielsen. If you know someone in the AOD field who has made an outstanding contribution to reducing the harms associated with alcohol and other drug use, please nominate them before 21 September. Nomination forms are available to download on our website along with a list of past winners.

Please spare a moment to visit the brand new APSAD website. The website offers a new Member’s section, which will be expanded upon within the coming months, and already includes past conference photos. We endeavour to have a member’s forum where we encourage discussion on topics with other members. To make life a little easier we have included online facilities to pay for your annual membership subscription fee with increased choices and discounts if you pay for more than one year at a time.

The APSAD Office will be relocating after six years at the Langton Centre in Surry Hills, with a move to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Specialty Society building at 149 Macquarie St. A big thank you to Associate Professor Nick Lintzeris and team for their generosity over the years.  CLICK HERE to download our new contact details. We’ll be having an office warming party in December, invitations will be sent out to members soon. I hope you can join us to celebrate our move and come to see the new office.

Our Annual AGM will be held at the conference, a notice was sent out to members in early September, if you didn’t receive yours please contact the APSAD office for a copy or go to the new website. There will be discussion on some significant issues and the direction APSAD should be taking for members including workforce and policy advocacy for members, and I strongly urge members to attend and have a say on how you feel APSAD should proceed and how we can best support our members and stay a relevant Society.

I look forward to seeing you in Melbourne this November.

Amanda Baker
