NoMa BID Wins Branding Award!
Get Connected in NoMa! The NoMa Business Improvement District just received a prestigious Pinnacle Award for our branding campaign from the International Downtown Association, an association of downtown redevelopment organizations from all over the world.

NoMa: Connected uses a sophisticated logo and messaging to focus on the ways NoMa connects you like no other place in DC:
  • NoMa is connected to the seat of power – just four blocks from the U.S. Capitol.
  • NoMa connects you to the city and the region with 14 modes of transportation, including Union Station, two Red Line metro stops, eight Capital Bikeshare stations and the 8-mile Metropolitan Branch biking/walking trail.
  • 20+ new retailers, including DC’s largest Harris Teeter, connect you to convenience and dining.
  • With brand-new, green buildings, NoMa connects you to value, a lower price per square foot than other downtown neighborhoods.
  • Panoramic vistas, rooftop pools, and stylish, new residences connect you to luxury.
  • Over 100 free events organized by the NoMa BID create opportunities to connect with neighbors.

The NoMa brand grew out of dozens of interviews with neighborhood residents, plus months of strategy, visioning, research and design development with The Roan Group and design firm DOXA. We launched our new logo and NoMa colors in spring 2011, and have spent the 18 months since implementing place branding, street banners, construction fence banners and other projects and events to beautify NoMa.  Since today’s NoMa was first-envisioned in planning efforts dating from the 1990s, NoMa has grown from theoretical ideas of “what could be” to a real-life, green, highly desirable neighborhood that checks the boxes on sustainability, transit-oriented development, mixed-use and great design.  The importance of NoMa as one of the District’s new, recognizable neighborhoods was acknowledged by WMATA in the re-naming of the Metro Station to NoMa Gallaudet.  Recent focus by Mayor Gray and the Council on the funding and development of NoMa parks will help magnify the success of this great 21st century neighborhood.
Capitol Plaza Receives LEED Platinum Certification

Capitol Plaza at 1200 First Street, NE, received LEED Platinum Certification for the operation of the building; platinum is the highest possible rating given by the U.S. Green Building Council.  In order to receive this rating, existing buildings must meet certain environmentally friendly criteria, such as daylighting, sustainable water recycling practices, proper ventilation, and energy-saving systems. The building recently had a green roof installed, as well as two bioretention projects outside the building to alleviate stormwater runoff that pollutes the Anacostia and Potomac rivers. (see more information in the lobby). 1200 First Street is the third building in NoMa to earn this certification, continuing our trend as the greenest neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Major tenants of the building include DC Public Schools, the District Department of the Environment, the Department of Homeland Security, and, of course, the NoMa BID.

Congratulations to Principal Group, the owners of the building and Polinger, Shannon, & Luchs the management company!

Greyhound Terminal Moves to Union Station

The Greyhound bus terminal at First and L Streets closed yesterday and moved to Union Station. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, was held yesterday. The ceremony celebrated the move of the nation’s largest provider of intercity transportation to a newly-constructed teminal on deck three in the Union Station garage. Perseus and First Potomac Realty purchased the building in May 2011 for almost $47 million dollars, which will be converted to a mixed-use residential and office development. In addition, the development designs include a proposed park on L Street, as outlined in the NoMa Public Realm Design Plan.
