The NoMa brand grew out of dozens of interviews with neighborhood residents, plus months of strategy, visioning, research and design development with The Roan Group and design firm DOXA. We launched our new logo and NoMa colors in spring 2011, and have spent the 18 months since implementing place branding, street banners, construction fence banners and other projects and events to beautify NoMa. Since today’s NoMa was first-envisioned in planning efforts dating from the 1990s, NoMa has grown from theoretical ideas of “what could be” to a real-life, green, highly desirable neighborhood that checks the boxes on sustainability, transit-oriented development, mixed-use and great design. The importance of NoMa as one of the District’s new, recognizable neighborhoods was acknowledged by WMATA in the re-naming of the Metro Station to NoMa Gallaudet. Recent focus by Mayor Gray and the Council on the funding and development of NoMa parks will help magnify the success of this great 21st century neighborhood.

Capitol Plaza Receives LEED Platinum Certification
|
|
Capitol Plaza at 1200 First Street, NE, received LEED Platinum Certification for the operation of the building; platinum is the highest possible rating given by the U.S. Green Building Council. In order to receive this rating, existing buildings must meet certain environmentally friendly criteria, such as daylighting, sustainable water recycling practices, proper ventilation, and energy-saving systems. The building recently had a green roof installed, as well as two bioretention projects outside the building to alleviate stormwater runoff that pollutes the Anacostia and Potomac rivers. (see more information in the lobby). 1200 First Street is the third building in NoMa to earn this certification, continuing our trend as the greenest neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Major tenants of the building include DC Public Schools, the District Department of the Environment, the Department of Homeland Security, and, of course, the NoMa BID.

The DC Bar Pro Bono Program, the DC Small Business Development Center Network and the Department of Small and Local Business Development are proud to present the Business Law Training Series for Small Business Owners. This is an eight-part course for existing small business owners, including sole proprietors, business partnerships, general managers and owners of LLCs. Participants will learn the basics of employment law, risk management, contracts, joint ventures and accounting from experienced business attorneys of D.C.'s most prestigious law firms. The course will begin on Wednesday, September 26th and continue for 8 consecutive Wednesday evenings. This program will take place at the Winston & Strawn, 1700 K Street, N.W. (Farragut North or West Metro Station). There is no cost for the course. There is a one-time payment of $50 for materials.
