Take advantage of this great opportunity...

Our November 3rd & 4th Toboggan Making class has been moved to December 1st & 2nd! It's the same class, just a different date. You will make your own taditional toboggan just in time for the snow to fly! This is a great class for both beginners and experienced woodworkers alike, as the class incorporates basic woodworking skills including working with patterns, cutting, fastening, and preparing the wood for finishing. In addition you will learn how to steam bend your runners, as well as a bit of history of how native people came to use the toboggan.

2012 Winter Raffles

This fall we are raffling off a winter quilt and a handcarved wooden loon. Both beautiful items would bring a touch of the Adirondacks to any home. Tickets are one for $2 or three for $5. The raffles will be drawn December 1st during our Gift the Adirondack Holiday Fair. Proceeds from the Holiday Fair and raffles will benefit the folk school and enable us to continue teaching the traditional arts and crafts of the Adirondacks.

Our October schedule has something for everyone...

Funding AFS
The myths and facts of funding AFS are many, but the plain truth is that your school requires funds from many sources beyond tuition.  Since day one our goal has tried to make our classes as affordable as possible, so that all could attend, yet also be able to compensate our instructors for their time and all they do prior to class in preparation (honestly, we don’t even come close).

Tuition covers a portion of our operating expenses, but membership, donations and grants (which are few these days) make up the difference.

Late this summer two fund raising efforts were started to strengthen the school’s finances and help fund new classes and programs.

The “1,000 & Counting Campaign” was sent out to each and every student who has taken a class at AFS.  We have now had over 1,200 students!  We hope the experiences and inspiration will encourage each of you to help others come and enjoy hands-on learning too!  Each donation (from $25 and more) makes a huge difference.

In our “46ers for the Adirondack Folk School” campaign you buy a high peak in the Adirondacks!  Well, not exactly, but by contributing the equivalent dollars to the elevation of your selected high peak, we will name the peak for you on a special plaque at the school and you will be part of a special dinner and presentation by Carl Heilman when all 46 (4000+ ft. peaks) are renamed by our special patrons.  A family, a company or a group of friends can purchase a single high peak.  Your donation can also be made over several years if that is more convenient.

As you can see in our graph we have a way to go towards reaching our goals.  We hope you will help.

Inspiring Hands, Heart & Mind

Have you ever thought about becoming an AFS Volunteer? There's lots to do and we certainly could use your help! Contact the school to learn how you can get involved in our Earn & Learn program--when you devote 35 hours to volunteering at AFS, you will receive a $40 "scholarship" to use towards any AFS class.
