Frequency of Newsletter
To date, the Next Chapter newsletter has arrived in your email inbox no more than once per month, sometimes less. Because there are times when time-sensitive information needs to get out, in the future we will occasionally send an email blast in between newsletters. In those instances, the e-blast will come from Next Chapter Kansas City and the subject line will indicate the specific activity being addressed. We thought you'd like to know in advance!
Exploring Jobs Courses Open for Fall Enrollment
Do you want an Encore Career, but don’t know what job you want or how to find it? Exploring Jobs Courses are four, online classes that are designed for adults of any age, including persons ages 50+ who are in employment or retirement transition. They are for individuals who are considering a new job or career experience that makes a social impact....often referred to as an Encore Career! Students work at their own pace, and the chosen course may be completed at any time during the eight-week time frame in which the class is offered. The Fall 2012 class is between October 15 and December 7. Enrollment will continue through November 16. The courses include the following:

Exploring Jobs in Education

Exploring Jobs in Caregiving
The classes provide a wealth of information about work in a range of employment settings – in traditional as well as less known work venues. Each course has four lessons, a resource center, and a moderated forum, all designed to provide helpful information and assist participants in determining their next best steps.
Consider this: Did you know that Green Jobs cross a broad range of occupations? Or that community organizing is one aspect of community engagement, but not exactly the same? Or that there are employment settings in the field of education outside the traditional classroom? Or that the career of Professional Caregiving is expanding to accommodate the anticipated, expanding number of older adults over the next 20 to 30 years? There's much to learn about these career fields.
The courses, which are $50 each, are sponsored by Next Chapter Kansas City and offered through Kansas City Kansas Community College; they are open to anyone. (You don’t have to live near Kansas City.) The instructor is Dale Graham, former principal at Piper High School. To view the course descriptions and endorsements, and to enroll, click here. New Book Group
A new Book Group co-sponsored by Next Chapter Kansas City and the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library will have its first discussion on Tuesday, October 16 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave, KCKS. The book will be A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; it won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Next Chapter Book Discussions to date have focused on nonfiction, and we have received feedback that participants would also like fiction. That's actually pretty difficult since it's not easy to find novels that focus on transition topics for persons age 50+. However, we think that A Visit from the Goon Squad contains some relevant themes.

What you should know about Long Term Care Insurance and Medicare
Do you keep thinking you should be looking into Long Term Care Insurance? Do you understand Medicare and what it provides - either for yourself or family members? Stop by after work or before your evening activities on Tuesday, October 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to learn more about these two topics. It will be held at the KCK Community College Conference Center (by the lake), 7250 State Ave, KCK. Light refreshments and socializing will begin at 4:45 p.m. There is no charge to attend. So that we have some idea of the numbers that will be attending, please RSVP by calling (913) 288-7660 or by emailing Mary Mair at primetimeclub@kckcc.edu beginning on Tuesday, September 25.
LaMonica Upton, Information and Assistance Specialist with the Wyandotte/ Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging, will be presenting on Medicare. Cindy Hermes, Director of Public Outreach and Health Care Consumer Ombudsman from the Kansas Insurance Department, will talk about Long Term Care Insurance. The event is co-sponsored by Kansas City Kansas Community College, Landon Center on Aging, and Wyandotte/ Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging together with Next Chapter Kansas City.
