The Importance of Probiotics After Antibiotics

It’s a common practice to take antibiotics when a nasty cold turns into a secondary bacterial infection or as a preventative measure after surgery or some other injury. After all, who wants to risk a serious bacterial infection when it could be easily avoided? Antibiotics are great at what they do; they kill bacteria. Unfortunately, they can’t discriminate between good bacteria and bad bacteria.

Good Bacteria Bring Overall Health, Well-being

More than 100 trillion good bacteria in the body play a vital role in overall health and well-being, particularly to immune function and digestion. Antibiotic treatments destroy many of these bacteria and therefore must be quickly replenished. The best way to do this is by consuming probiotics, which contain live bacteria that will repopulate the gut.

Because the immune system is compromised after taking a course of antibiotics, it is important not to neglect the good bacteria to avoid the risk of reinfection. One way to help maintain a balance of good bacteria is to begin taking probiotics while taking antibiotics; however, one should wait at least a few hours after taking a dose of antibiotics to take a dose of probiotics.

Probiotic Foods and Supplements

Probiotics exist in various food products like yogurt and are found in particularly high concentrations in kefir. For most people who don’t have access to raw milk, store-bought (pasteurized) kefir and yogurt still contain a fair amount of probiotics.

What Probiotics Can Do

  • Help improve digestion and absorption of vitamins

  • Help manufacture vitamins needed by the body

  • Help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria that cause digestive stress *

Bumper Tomato Crop at AGGRAND Food Plot

The AGGRAND food plot experiments continued this season for the third year in a row. Harvest time is here.

“Despite this growing season’s extreme temperatures, cutworm infestation and flooding, we have experienced a bumper crop of tomatoes,” said Richard Holappa, AGGRAND research and development manager. “With about 80 percent of the crop harvested, it appears that the plots fertilized with AGGRAND will yield more and better quality tomatoes than the plot fed with a leading organic fertilizer.”

Check the AGGRAND website a www.aggrand.com for complete results of the 2010 and 2011 growth studies, and keep an eye out for the results of the 2012 growing season.

The annual growth plot studies give AGGRAND fertilizer users “real-life” comparison and technical information to help them more effectively use AGGRAND natural fertilizers.
