Last month Todd and I flew out to Burlington, VT to visit our son Scott at his college. My mom, our daughters Laura and Lisa and son-in-law Eric were also able to join us. We had wonderful family time, enjoyed the beautiful fall colors, picked apples, tasted wine and saw two of Scott's soccer games. Here he is with my mom at the mountain town of Stowe - home of Ben and Jerry's ice cream!

The Joy of Negative Painting
Ask any of my students and they will tell you that my favorite way to watercolor is to use negative painting or painting around a shape to pull it forward. Years ago, when I first started painting, I was lucky to have a teacher that introduced this method and have loved it ever since. Painting the space around a shape allows you to make the object appear lighter in comparison to the background, add depth and dimension to the painting and forces you to use the creative right side of your brain - what could be better!
