Whisky Myths

What better way to warm up on the newly cool nights than with a whisky? While many of us love the brown spirit, there are lots of myths and misconceptions about how to drink it and what determines quality. The good folks at Liquor.com do some whisky mythbusting that we think is incredibly helpful.

A little dram will do you. Here are five fab whiskies from around the world worth exploring.

Monkey Shoulder. Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Scotland > Speyside. $27

Monkey Shoulder is named for an injury workers used to sustain when turning barley by hand as part of the malting process. Three different Speyside malts are aged in used bourbon barrels and then blended, resulting in this smooth, rich and slightly spicy whisky.

High West Distillery. Son of Bourye
USA > Utah. $42

The first legal distillery in Utah since 1870, High West has brought innovation and a sense of humor to the US spirits business. A blend of bourbon and rye, the folks at High West recommend enjoying Son of Bourye neat or on the rocks, preferably around a campfire. We recommend keeping a fire extinguisher handy on your rooftop.

Amrut Distilleries. Fusion Single Malt Whisky
India. $61

India not the first place you think of when pondering world-class whisky? The Jadgale family started out supplying whisky to the Indian military in 1948 and have grown Amrut into an award-winning distillery. Big, bold and smoky, Fusion is an inspired introduction to Indian spirits.

Masterson's. Rye 10 Year Old
Canada. $63

Canada has contributed a lot to global culture: Leonard Cohen, half of the cast of SNL over the years, a cover for Americans travelling abroad, and whisky! Masterson's 10 Year Rye is spicy and earthy with a touch of vanilla sweetness. Tasty, eh?!

Red Breast. 12 Year Cask Strength Irish Whiskey
Ireland. $82

Voted Irish Whiskey of the Year by the Whiskey Advocate, this is a serious sip. The mag says it is a, "rich, bittersweet...oaky-spiced delight...the increased strength gives an already great whiskey a richer, fuller, fruitier dimension." We say, "Yes, please!"
