The Radiance of an Indian Summer

Earlier this week, the sweat on our brow from the sun on our face let us know that summer wasn't quite over yet. This weekend's farmer's market will leave a similar impression. But as summer produce continues to linger, fall produce makes its steady transition in.

Pair Your Indian Summer with a Pear

There is not a better way to welcome the Fall, while quenching the last rays of summer heat than enjoying the curvy, juicyness of a pear. Related to the apple, almond and apricot trees, the pear tree originates froms central Asia. But these days you'll see these sweet, fleshy delights on the tables of Frog Hollow Farm. Farmer Al is excited to announce their signature Warren Pear is back! With a texture that is silky and sweet, the Warren Pear is worth the time and energy it takes to grow this often difficult variety.

Some Pear Pickin' Tips:
- Choose them when they're smooth and firm, with no bruises or mold
- When the flesh softens under a light finger pressure they are ready to gobble
- Pears are fragile and rot quickly, so eat within a few days of purchase and store them on top of other fruits
- But don't store them with apples, onions, potatoes, cabbages or other pungently aromatic foods as the skin of pears easily absorbs odors

We saved some summer for you and your table!

Food Fun: Cilantro and Walnut Pesto

Here's a recipe from our very own Market Manager and his family!

You've been patient and now comes the rewards of the long warm days of summer to your table. We just made the most delicious squash soap to serve with our warm weather salad of greens from Happy Boy Organics. Throw in a slice of great whole grain bread from Octoberfeast and you have a delicious meal that the whole family will enjoy.

We put a dollop of our favorite garnish in the middle of each bowl:

Cilantro and Walnut Pesto
1 cup walnut pieces,
2 cups cilantro
1 jalapeño, seeded and chopped,
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 Tbl. cider vinegar
1/4 of purified water (approximately)
Put walnuts in food processor and grind fine.
Add the rest of the ingredients but just a few tablespoons of water to make it just thick enough. Keep the leftover covered and refrigerated for a great dip.
