The Modern Quilt Guild
A note from:
Robert Kaufman

We at Robert Kaufman are counting down the days until QuiltCon – just 4 short months to go! Our bags are practically already packed (‘80s gear – check! Kona Cotton giveaways – check!), so now we’re spending our days getting together loads of fabulous new fabrics for the modern sewist.

We know you’re all familiar with Kona® Cotton Solids and how imperative it is for your stash to be well stocked in this classic basic, but we thought you should also know about an all new modern basic, called Architextures.

Architextures is the debut fabric collection from talented young quilt pattern and fiber stamp designer Carolyn Friedlander. Carolyn grew up in Florida on a cattle and citrus ranch, studied and practiced architecture in St. Louis, then learned to quilt in 2009 and has pursued quilting passionately ever since. She started her own self-named company in early 2010 with custom machine quilting and has since added quilt patterns and art quilt stamps with a fresh, modern appeal. She’s had a booth at the last few Quilt Markets and will again this fall 2012, as well as a Schoolhouse Session on the modern quilting aesthetic.

With Architextures, Carolyn really lets her architecture background shine. This collection of innovative textures includes ledger paper, topography maps, city & landscape blueprints the perfect cross-hatch, & Carolyn’s own handwriting (in signature architect’s style of all caps) in a text print, which describes the collection and her process of designing it. The prints are colored in a modern palette, a mix of quiet peaches and grays, combined with bold blues and bright greens, and even an essential white on white.

The fabrics will be available at your favorite local quilt shop starting at the end of November.

With the help of Carolyn, we also merchandised some new Kona precuts – roll-ups and charm squares to coordinate with the Architextures collection. The colors were hand-picked by Carolyn and used in her quilt designs, in conjunction with the prints.

And, as if these fabrics weren’t stash-worthy enough on their own, you should definitely check out this plethora of innovative quilt patterns from some of our favorite designers!
 Architexture Quilts
Quilt patterns using Architextures from Carolyn Friedlander (from left to right):
  • Her Local quilt is designed as a 9-month Block-of-the-Month pattern with all instructions included in one pattern pack.
  • The Sessoms quilt is charm square friendly - use one Architextures charm pack with one Kona coordinates charm pack to complete one quilt top - just add accent and border.
  • The Shirts quilt is charm square friendly - use one Architextures charm pack with one Kona coordinates charm pack to complete one quilt top.
  • Julie Herman from Jaybird Quilts had a chance to play with the fabrics as well, to develop her super-clever new Science Fair quilt pattern. The quilt is roll-up friendly - just add background fabric to complete one quilt top.
  • And finally, we couldn’t resist the charm of the Sealed with a Kiss quilt pattern from Eliza of If She Sleeps... blog. The quilt is charm pack friendly - just add background fabric to complete one quilt top.

The Big MQG Swap

Trisch of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild started organizing an inter-guild pincushion swap. We love how the swap is encouraging guild members to meet and make connections with people in other guilds. She is even matching QuiltCon attendees together so that people can meet in person and swap their pincushions. She has inspired us to reach out to more guilds and organize other swaps. We are looking for a few volunteers* to coordinate 4 or 5 guild swaps. Interested Swap Organizer Volunteers should email heather.grant@quiltcon.com for more details.

We’ll post details on the Modern Quilt Guild blog in the next few weeks.

*We’d like to keep it to one swap per guild, so guilds participating in the pincushion swap organizing by Trisch are already signed up.

QuiltCon Raffle Quilts

Elizabeth Hartman has completed our QuiltCon raffle quilts! First, there is the amazing quilt that resulted from the QuiltCon Block Challenge.  Selecting from over 400 submitted blocks, Elizabeth assembled her favorites into a vibrant quilt that perfectly reflects the excitement that our membership feels about the event.

We have a second original raffle quilt that was beautifully designed and made by Elizabeth that we will reveal on the Modern Quilt Guild blog on Wednesday. Stay tuned to see this gorgeous quilt!

Make sure you save a few dollars for when raffle tickets are on sale at QuiltCon. You know that you will want a chance to be the proud owner of one of these wonderful modern quilts!
