RE: Expand your horizons

Dig deeper into what’s already around you.

Look for using out of the way, oddball, local produce even if it means killing it yourself. Ask ten close friends to bring a person or couple who no ones knows to your next party. There will be cohesion and eclecticism all at once. For decoration, limit yourself to what’s in your back yard – palm fronds become placemats, elephant ears become platters, banana leaves become serving trays. No back yard is no excuse; beach combing or pulling over to the side of the highway could yield even bigger treasures.
Our point is we want you to push your horizons by more closely exploring what’s closest to you.

The Deans

The Deans know that houses like to be lived in, and we are going to show you how to do exactly that.

Not only will you learn how to cook, you will learn to connect to your home.

Using what’s in season, literally.

One day when the little boy was asked what the four seasons were he said, “Deer, dove, duck and turkey”. He was right on! If you have never tried hunting and you live in the low country maybe it’s time you did. If killing things is not your style, heirloom vegetables and fruits are all the rage. A platter of pink okra that you grew yourself is every bit as impressive as a fully cooked, trussed, wild turkey. Investing more of yourself in dinner spreads love and creates talking points.

How to network without leaving your house.

One way to make people feel like their local town is twice as big and three times as exciting is to give a party with ten close friends and charge them to bring a guest no one knows. Everyone is responsible for making their guest comfortable and meeting other people. Make sure to use a tight space so that everyone mingles and mixes maximumly.  We guarantee the party will be lively.

Poach an idea you saw somewhere else.

Something that you experienced in a foreign land will be even more fun when you recreate it back at home. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel for every party.
Suzanne was at the exotic Georgetown Four Seasons bar, and while she was slightly surprised that no one tried to pick her up, it did leave her time to study her cocktail: three different colors of peppers juiced, tequila, a shot of lime and agave served with a picked yellow pepper. The Deans made a few twists and named our version Sunshine Salad. Click here for recipe.

Lee traversed 1200 miles of the Mongolian countryside. Her favorite experience was the communal one pot party. There were bubbly pots of peppery broths and everyone dipped fresh vegetables and meat in the pot. This is a fun idea for a cozy dinner party, much lighter and healthful than fondue, but still retains the fun of cooking tableside.  Click here for recipe.
