Spencer and his bow hunted Chamois

Sue's Africa during Aug 2012:
I embarked on a 17 day safari by hiring a Cessna 182 and flying myself as pilot in command from Wonderboom, Johannesburg, South Africa then flying onward to Botswana to visit the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Okavango Delta and then continuing the flying safari to Zimbabwe via Victoria Falls, Mana Bush Fleet Cessna's 182 Africa Safari 2012Pools, then south to Imire Rhino Park via Mashatu Camp in Botswana and back to Johannesburg via the Blyde Canyon in South Africa. 24.9 hours of flying over 17 days with two other Cessna's in the convoy. The fleet consisted of registrations: ZS-NOY, my plane, ZS-MZV, Dee Bond Pilot in Command, ZS-IFB Richard Primrose Pilot in Command with crew and pilot, Hugh de Lautour. Within the group were 4 pilots and 3 crew, Belinda de Lautour, Deb Griffiths and Neil Young. My fellow Aviatrix, Dee and I completed and obtained our South African Licences over a 2 day period. This enabled us to pilot our own aircraft.
The aircraft hummed throughout the trip, the scenery was vast and old with many valleys, flat land, rivers, dams and reservoirs. The weather was a constant blue sky and low level flying was shared by dodging vultures but we saw a plethora of animals and waving communities.
Parts of Africa are 'trying' as we used the term 'TIA' - "This is Africa". Do not expect instant results, learn to compromise, pay up fees even though you were not informed of them, wait, smile, and breath.
Meerkat country in Makgadikgadi Pans, BotswanaMy marvelous 'Bose' headset allows my ipod to plug in and play tunes to me. I sang and hummed in rhythm with the motor therefore many parts of the trip are remembered by artists such as Brian Ferry and Joan Armatrading.
Botswana is a fine country with a thriving diamond mine industry and a total population of 2 million people. Botswana offers so much to the animal viewing visitor and they have well planned facilities to cater to this. Zimbabwe has a hub called 'Victoria Falls'. The constant arrival of people there is a staple income but I am unsure if the citizens reap the benefits back into their economy. Very patriotic people who love their country and are frustrated that the infrastructure has been abandoned by the mafia Government. But still they carry on with the facilities they have and they made us very welcome.
The game drives, accommodation and guides were outstanding at every stop and Victoria Falls was a time to remember.
I wish to share some photos with you.

Telfords success in Europe during Aug/Sep 2012 Season:
The Telford Clan gathered in Heathrow on the 18 August. Sue from Johannesburg and GT, Laetitia and Melanie from New Zealand via Hong Kong.
The bonus are our friends in the countries we visited. Of course we cannot visit everyone but managed to catch up with Don Philp and Paul Brown our fly fishing regulars.
My flying clients Mike & Fred Cronk from the UK, paid us a visit while we were in South England and flew their Cessna 182 with myself and Laetitia on board for an hours flight around the Salisbury Plain, lovely!
The main reason for our trip was to attend Paul Brown's 21st birthday in Switzerland (did I say '21st'? Okay he is a little older than that). The invitation was such that we could not refuse and it was to be a once in a life time opportunity. Thank you Paul.

The Highlights were: visiting, staying, eating and exploring with our wonderful friends and thanks! Pellworm and Berlin were an education (thanks Ute & Grant). Paris was "Smartcars, Smokers and Scooters". The UK was an introduction to slim roads, a fortunate flight in a Cessna 182 in south England around the Salisbury Plain (thanks Mike & Fred Cronk) and catching up with our UK family, the Sellicks and friends. The fast trains, Gruyere Cheese, Swizz Chocolate (thanks Willi and Magali)  and hiking in the Swiss Alps in glorious weather conditions broadly describes our adventure!
Laetitia & Melanie's stamina lasted one month exactly before collapsing with exhaustion.  There were kids there age along the way and that meant swimming, running and socialising - great fun!Girls love swimming!

We were most fortunate to visit our UK friend of many SCI Shows, Karl who was suffering cancer. He passed away a short time after we had the pleasure to see him. We send our wishes and thoughts to Victoria his lovely wife.

Now we venture into the New Zealand 2013 season. The flying in New Zealand is a privilege with diverse terrain and weather restraints that can change plans, but the clear air that follows provide awesome photo opportunities.

Now that we have broadened our horizons 'somewhat' we are back in New Zealand and appreciate the clarity and beauty that surrounds us. The bow hunting has begun and the trout are about to have their 'lips ripped'.
Bring on 2013 Season!

Words Cannot express how wonderful your hospitality means to us.  Thank you for allowing us to become part of your "family" and may we keep in touch as friends.  We will always remember the days we spend with you and letting us play in your beautiful backyard!!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here with Sue & Gerald.  It has truly been a trip of a lifetime.  Being invited into their home has made our time here very special. Gerald's expertise in guiding us on our hunts allowed us to obtain the best quality trophies.  We came as customers but leave as friends.  Susan & Weedie Sweet, Texas, USA - May 2011
