Just over a week ago, Christopher Kennedy invited me to see his work at California Home+Design’s Small Space Big Style Showhouse in Hollywood.  When I first moved to LA, I lived briefly in Hollywood so when I saw the address on Yucca St., I figured I knew where I was going.

After driving in thick traffic, in circles, for 20 minutes in a 2-block radius, I found the last parking spot in Hollywood and started the walk to my number.  Five minutes later I realized it was farther along than I thought, but I’d already invested too much time and I didn’t want to turn around.  Five minutes after that I was still walking – in heels with newly frizzed hair – and cursing myself for not checking the address on a map first.

ask a better question

This may be hard to believe, but you don’t know it all. So many designers I speak with REALLY want clarity, expansion and new results in their business but like me, they take for granted that the route they’re using to get there is the right one.  Or even if they do figure out that they’re going the wrong way, they’re too stubborn to start over and find a new way to solve their problems.

I knew a condo development was going up at Vine and even though I haven’t lived in the neighborhood for six years, I’d driven through it enough to know that nothing much had changed.  What I didn’t know is that the other half of Yucca St. had.

When it comes to getting what you want in your business and your life, you don’t know what you don’t know.  You definitely don’t have the answers to questions that you don’t know how to ask, and if you’re addicted to what you can see, you’re going to have a hard time trusting what you don’t see, in other words possibility.  When you don’t know what’s possible, you don’t get that a business and life bigger than the size of the box you’re living in, actually exists.

leap

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.  Don’t believe me.  Believe Einstein.  He said it first.

Taking a step into unfamiliarity territory is never comfortable.  That’s because the part of you that’s keeping you in confusion is rather content where you are. So ask yourself, what are you getting out of not moving forward?  If you’re defending why you can’t, how you got yourself into this situation, why you’re stuck and can list the things you don’t want in your life, there is NO time to focus on what you do.

But the moment you make the decision to step forward, space opens up.  Go out on a limb and be willing to risk getting a different result, to leap.  Book your
It Factor Intensive™ for the first week in December.  Make 2013 your year to run a business that is on point and on purpose.
