Dear parents and students
We are extremely proud to bring you this first very special newsletter for BSB alumni around the world. It is lovingly called Swoosh after the curve device within our logo, which denotes vitality, movement and in particular the journey that many of our alumni take before, during and after, life at BSB. Indeed, that’s what our very own alumni Tom Baker and his twin sister Eve had in mind when they designed the swoosh image as Year 11 students in 2007.

BSB is over 40 years old! Amongst our amazing network of talent we have very successful and sometimes famous alumni such as Victoria Hollins (BBC presenter), Deborah Lawrenson (author), Christine Kavanagh (actress), Steven Rowbotham (Olympic rowing medalist), and Nick Kennedy (national rugby player). Photographer Richard Baker was interviewed for the latest Tapestry magazine (see below).

The list of successful careers of BSB alumni is long and includes artists, civil servants and emerging politicians. We'd love to hear from you, so send us a message and we might feature you next time - famous or not! BSB alumna Helen King told us recently "I attended BSB back in 1997-2000 as a Primary School student. The School has to be the most amazing place I've ever encountered, and I am filled with nostalgia about my time there."

We aim to send this newsletter at least twice a year to showcase BSB news and views, alumni news in particular. We would be delighted to have your feedback, and do let us know if you would like to contribute to future issues. Thank you to staff member Mary Timberlake who suggested the name Swoosh.

We hope you enjoy the read!

Re-connect with BSB on social media

Mascots

BSB is on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Our official Facebook page www.facebook.com/britishschoolbrussels and Twitter feed www.twitter/BSB_Brussels will keep you up-to-date on news and events at BSB.

For those of you who registered on our alumni software WebAlumnus, you'll know that this is no longer operational for BSB. Our new alumni bases are this LinkedIn alumni group and Facebook alumni group. Already on the Facebook Group, there are class photos going back to 1973. You are welcome to come along and 'tag' the photos with the missing names. Please drop by and say hello, your fellow alumni will be glad to hear from you.

Graduating class of 1977, as seen on Facebook!

We're on YouTube and Flickr, too! You'll find the links to our videos and photos at the end of this newsletter. Just click on the icons.

ITN film about BSB

In September, a TV crew from the UK's ITN Productions came to BSB. They came to make a film about our School for ITN's new educational channel. The film includes interviews with Sue Woodroofe, the bilingual team and some CAS students. We're very proud of the final result, which you can watch here.

The best-ever Book Week

Book Week 2012

Book Week in October 2012 lived up to its billing and more: ‘Simply the best’! Authors from around the globe took us on a journey as we explored the theme of ‘A New Book, A New World’.  In the words of one guest, “Book Week rocked”.

An array of authors, illustrators, storytellers and book artists performed and shared their skills with us. In turn our students responded creatively, imaginatively and in a thought provoking way particularly in the Primary School where the students wrote and illustrated their own books. In the Secondary School the undoubted highlight was the Poetry Slam competition compèred by  our own MC, Adisa, the Verbaliser.

For the connoisseur there was the Wednesday performance evening with Adisa, Adam Bushnell, Alex Scarrow and Dixie Dansercoer. The videos are on YouTube.

Richard Baker, alumnus

Richard attended BSB from 1970 to 1978. He was BSB’s 14th student. In the latest edition of Tapestry magazine, Richard wrote “School was so exciting! Amazingly, we called the teachers by their first names. It’s a cliché and although I didn’t appreciate it then, I do think my time at the fledgling BSB were my glory days”.

BSB Christmas card 2012

The BSB Christmas card design was put to students this year as a House competition. We had several excellent entries with the overall winner coming from Juliette Lemaitre in Year 1 with a fantastic drawing in which snowmen are wearing a scarf with flags from all the students in her class.

The card really captures the international environment at the School as well as having the Union Flag and Belgian tricolour on the snowmen's hats.
