Dr. Chris Spiese of Ohio Northern University is working on a new method to detect phosphate, the most common form of phosphorus runoff, in river water samples. His project, funded by an Ohio Sea Grant Development Grant, could make phosphorus monitoring faster and cheaper for organizations like the Ohio EPA.

Stone Lab’s Lake Erie Science Field Trips give students the chance to study Lake Erie for a day, first on a research vessel, then in the Gibraltar Island lab. Additional activities can be added to create a one-day or two-day trip, including a stay in the island dormitory.

Stone Lab not only acts as Ohio Sea Grant’s education and research facility on Lake Erie, but also hosts a number of outreach events every year. 2012 was especially impactful, as Gibraltar Island hosted prominent donors, journalists, government officials, and representatives of environmental organizations such as The Nature Conservancy.
