Livingstone Gearing up for 2013

Motocross Enduro Rally

Motocross Enduro Rally scheduled for March 2013

Livingstone Zambia is gearing up for 2013. In March next year, we will be holding a Motocross Enduro Rally - this will be a family event with bush trails, exciting jumps and spectator viewing. Side events for children and arts & crafts exhibition, stalls, food and drink. This Rally is the first sporting event in a series of exciting, fun, lively and colourful events and festivals planned to commemorate Dr David Livingstone and the bicentenary of his birth.

2013 in Livingstone is all about celebrating Dr David Livingstone's Bicentenary, born 200 years ago on 19 March 1813. Come and participate in our series of events and festivals!

Lots more information about What's On, Where to Stay, What to do and how to join in can be found on our website  www.livingstone2013.com.

Livingstone 2013 meet HRH The Princess Royal
Livingstone 2013 had the honour of meeting HRH, The Princess Royal, at a Reception held in Livingstone by HE The British High Commissioner to Zambia on Friday 28 September to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Princess Royal is co-Patron of the Scotland-Malawi Partnership, one of the UK organisations with whom Livingstone 2013 is working closely.

Community Projects

Inspired by Livingstone's own commitment to education, we are forging links between schools here in Livingstone Zambia with schools in Livingston Scotland (home to David Livingstone's friend and sponsor James "Paraffin" Young). These links are being developed through Ewan McVicar in Scotland, with the help of The British Council here in Zambia, and the schools will connect through storytelling, musical and cultural exchanges using a digital hub.

To mark Livingstone's dedication as a missionary and doctor, our plans are progressing well for an Medical Exchange programme between Livingstone Hospital and Scotland to enable a Clinical Officer and a junior doctor to go to Scotland to gain wider experience. In the opposite direction a doctor will come here to share his knowledge and help with local training.

To tie in the 'unsung' people surrounding David Livingstone on his travels, including Sussi & Chuma, Robert Thornton, Thomas Baines and Charles Mellor, who amassed vast collections for scientific institutions in Great Britain, we are working closely with John Zulu, manager at The Falls, to create a Treasure Hunt for school children and visitors alike, so that they can appreciate the amazing ecosystem, geology and ethnicology which has been created by The Victoria Falls.

St Mary's School
St Mary's School Calne, a leading British independent school, is coming to Zambia in October next year to help our the Anglican Street Children's Programme build a school in stages up near Chama - project which will greatly benefit this rural area - one of the most undeveloped regions in Zambia where the plight of orphans and vulnerable children, in particular girls, is worse with very few organisations addressing their needs.

Calendar of Events

James Paraffin Young

James "Paraffin" Young
Father of the world's oil industry, Young was also friend and sponsor of David Livingstone. He arranged for Sussi & Chuma to visit Great Britain after their arduous journey across Africa to ensure Livingstone's body was returned to London for burial in Westminster Abbey. With their help, he built a mini-Victoria Falls in memory of Livingstone at his home, Limefield House, just outside Livingston in Scotland.
