Department for Education Launches Multi Million Funding Programme

Voluntary and community sector organisations, social enterprises and other not-for-profit organisations are invited to apply to the Department for Education’s new National Prospectus Grants Programme 2013-15.

The programme will provide up to £30 million in grant funding for each year in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Although there is no stated minimum or maximum level of funding, it is thought that most bids will be between £100,000 and £750,000 per year.

Funding News

Funding Do’s and Don’ts

The do’s;
  • READ the guidelines. If you don’t meet a funder’s eligibility criteria, don’t waste your time applying.
  • Do learn as much as you can about a funder before applying and tailor your application to fit. Generic “cut and paste” appeals for support are unlikely to impress.
  • Do remember that there may be restrictions on how funds can be spent. Ensure that you’re clear about all the terms and conditions to which a grant might be subject.

How Can I Increase my Chances of Receiving Further Funding?

1. Complete monitoring or progress reports fully and in a timely fashion.

One leading funder told me recently that less than 30% of their grantees provide their progress reports on time.

2. Be prepared to go the extra mile.

See getting the money initially as a good start, but work to maintain the relationship, keep your end of the bargain, and look beyond reporting the operational outcomes of your funded work. Communicate how the work contributes to the shared bigger picture/vision that you both have.

11 Things That Funders Look For

1. Need:

Funders want projects that meet a genuine need, and for you to have evidence of that need, they’ll also want to know exactly how their money will help improve things.

2. Clarity of purpose:

Ensure that your aims are clearly described. This means more than just listing your goals: funders will also want to know how you intend to achieve them. We see a lot of general statements and too much explanation of the need for the work, rather than explanations of the work itself.

3. A measure of success:

How will you measure the impact of your work? What would constitute a positive outcome? Most funders will want you to address these questions in your application – if you don’t know what success looks likes, then you’re unlikely to instil confidence in those holding the purse strings.

ECB The PCA Masters fundraising opportunity

The ECB has recently been working with the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) to bring a new fundraising opportunity to cricket clubs.

The PCA Masters cricket team, consisting of ex-England and county players, are offering a limited number of clubs the chance to play them in a Twenty20 match at their ground. The clubs involved will have the potential to raise significant amounts of money as long as they are prepared to work hard.

There is a fee involved but with forward planning and dedication clubs can raise the money to cover this and also generate considerable profit for their own use.

Olympic Games: A dead end for team sports?

As decisions loom over funding of the road to Rio 2016 for Team GB, ‘minority’ sports are bracing themselves for severe funding cuts that they claim will destroy them.

Britain’s Olympic team sports face being “destroyed” when funding for the Rio Games is revealed later this month, it has been claimed. The amount of money handed out to volleyball, handball, hockey and bastketball is set to be drastically cut from its London high, a reduction that threatens to waste the progress made by sports in the build-up to this summer’s Olympic Games.
