Celebrating Winter Graduates
Winter graduates of Southern Wesleyan University’s Adult Evening Program were recognized Dec. 2 at the Greenville Learning Center. SWU to confer degrees in three ceremonies
Commencement exercises will draw graduates, their families and friends to Southern Wesleyan University’s campus in Central December 14 and 15. The speaker for the ceremony will be Shirley Duncan, director of church relations at Hephzibah Ministries, Macon, Ga. Duncan was once a child at Hephzibah Children’s Home.There will be a Baccalaureate service Friday at 10 a.m. with Dr. Bob Bagley, Africa Area director for Global Partners, the mission arm of The Wesleyan Church, as the speaker. Brian Bartlett has been appointed as systems administrator (IT) effective Dec. 1. Bartlett had been serving as computer support specialist/technical services team lead and has been employed at SWU since 2007. Please join us in congratulating him on this new assignment.
Southern Wesleyan University announced a $500 scholarship that will be available to all new adult and graduate students enrolling December 2012 through February 2013. The President’s Scholarship will offer $500 to new adult and graduate students to apply toward their first course and will also enter them into a drawing for a full year of tuition costs, with a winner to be selected in early March. Student’s game gets attention of Florida museum
Curtis Todd, a computer science major, is releasing Catalyst 2012 for Xbox, a robotics simulator game played on a basketball- like court. Catalyst 2012 got the attention of officials at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee, Fla., who are developing an interactive exhibit in collaboration with FIRST, an organization that inspires young people to be science and technology leaders. Catalyst 2012 will be a permanent part of the exhibit, which is aimed at helping students discover robotics. Also, a new game will be released in January 2013. View the trailer in YouTube. Todd will be traveling to a kickoff competition next month in New Hampshire and a competition at New York City. Additionally, he will travel to regionals across the Southeast and will return to the FIRST Championship at St. Louis, Mo.
Warrior Basketball Teams to Play at NBA Arena
The Southern Wesleyan University women's and men's basketball teams will be playing after the Charlotte Bobcats’ game against Houston at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, Jan. 21, 2013 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day). "We are excited to have this opportunity to have our student-athletes play in a NBA arena," commented SWU Director of Athletics Chris Williams. Ticket prices are $25 each, which is the price for three basketball games, which includes the Bobcats game at 2 p.m. The Warriors will follow the NBA game, playing conference opponent Southern Polytechnic State University at 5 p.m. (Women) and 7 p.m. (Men). Pena and Andrade Named NAIA All-Americans
NAIA announced that Daniel Pena and Douglas Andrade were both named to the 2012 NAIA Men's Soccer All-American Teams. The NAIA All-America committee consists of the NAIA-Men's Soccer Coaches Association Executive Committee, the championship games committee and two men's soccer coaches based on geography. Read more>>
Members of the Charleston adult enrollment team participated with the Education Foundation and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce as “Principal for the Day” in their annual event Dec. 6. Overall, it was a very good chance to make some new friends in education for SWU, according to Charleston Regional Director Dean Grile, left, pictured with Chicora Elementary School of Communications Principal Brian Agnew. Grile spent the day with Agnew, along with staff and teachers at the school, located in the Charleston County School District. “Brian and his team are excellent at what they do, and it was a great opportunity to see what a day in the life looks like for many of our SWU MED students,” Grile said. Matt Hogan, admissions coordinator, participated at Rolling’s Middle School of the Arts in the Dorchester Two County School District and Leigh Thomson, admissions coordinator, participated at Berkeley High School in the Berkeley County School District.
Christmas/New Year’s Break
As faculty, students and staff push towards the end of the fall semester, we just wanted to remind you about the dates for the Christmas/New Year’s break. For 12-month employees, the Christmas holiday schedule begins on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 (university offices reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2).

CAT Bus route change Dec. 14
Due to graduation ceremonies Dec. 14 on the university’s campus in Central, CATbus will not be traveling from Clayton Street to the square on Wesleyan Drive until 6 p.m. The Red Route will travel its normal route through downtown Central. The CAT bus will deviate by continuing straight on and turning right on to Clayton Street (SWU Main Entrance), then the bus will continue to Wesleyan Drive, turn right and then resume the route as normal. Passengers will be picked up and dropped off on the corner of Clayton Street and Wesleyan Drive.
