Dec 2012 Newsletter
There's loads of exciting competition news in this edition of the newsletter. As well as a round-up of the recent Bristol Uni Lifesaving Competition, there's news of two forthcoming competitions in our branch! We'd also like to say "Good luck" to everyone from the branch who is competing at the Royal Lifesaving Society National Championships next weekend!
There's something for instructors (and wannabe instructors) too, with news of two great new courses in the branch.
Finally the RLSS Avon & North Wiltshire Committee would like to wish all our lifesavers a Happy and Safe Christmas. See you next year!
Lifesaving Instructor Course - 2/3 Feb 2013
If you would like to teach the new RLSS Survive and Save awards you'll need to qualify as a Lifesaving Instructor. The next Lifesaving Instructor course will take place on 2 & 3 Feb 2013 in Bristol. The course is subsidised by RLSS Avon & North Wiltshire so it'll cost you just £60 to take part. Please see the RLSS West Region Website for full details and to book your place.
Instructor Development Day - 2 Feb 2013 (tbc)
If you're already a qualified Lifesaving Instructor, but you lack confidence with the Survive and Save syllabus, our Instructor Development Day is perfect for you! This is your opportunity to ask questions about the S&S syllabus, practice the S&S skills for yourself, hone your CPR, chat to other instructors and pick up loads of practical ideas to make your teaching sessions more engaging. Taking place in Bristol on the 2 Feb 2013 (tbc), the course is subsidised by RLSS Avon & North Wiltshire so it'll cost you just £10 to take part. Please see the RLSS West Region Website for full details and to book your place.
British University Lifesaving Nationals - 16/17 Mar 2013
The national student championships will be taking place on the 16th/17th March 2013 at the University of Bath. We're entering an Avon & North Wiltshire Branch team, which is open to lifesavers of any ability from within the branch.
Please see the BULSCA website for more details about the competition or e-mail avon@rlsswest.org.uk by 14 Jan 2013 if you'd like to join the A&NW team.
Keynsham LSC Open Competition - 20 Apr 2013
Keynsham Lifesaving Club are holding their first ever open lifesaving competition and they want YOU to take part! This event makes an ideal introduction to competitive lifesaving because it’s specifically aimed at lifesavers without little or no prior experience of competitions.
Teams of two will compete in a Land-Based Initiative Test, Aquatic Initiative Test, Line Throw, Obstacle Swim, Swim and Tow, and 50m Freestyle Relay (time permitting). The competition is open to lifesavers in school years 6-13. There are no prerequisite awards required and they'll even match you with a partner if you don't have anyone to compete with!
Enter by 28 Feb 2013 for a special reduced rate of just £8 per person (normally £10). See www.klsc.co.uk/competition for full details.
University Lifesaving News

Bristol Uni LSC have had a superb start to the university lifesaving season, finishing 4th, 5th and 3rd in the first three events of the season. Bath weren't able to field a team for last weekend's competition in London, but both Universities will be looking ahead to the first competition of the New Year in Warwick. |
