One Artmonk's Story:
Chef Emma

Emma "Dilemma" Sanchez was the Chef at the Art Monastery Project for the 90-day summer 2012 laboratory. Her time at the AMP has convinced her that we can change the world for the better:

"When I first thought of coming to the Art Monastery Project and participating in the 2012 Summer Laboratory, I didn’t know if I could do it. Leave my life in the city? Move to Italy? Okay: maybe I could do that, but to be a monk? What does it mean to be an Artmonk? I have cooked for the last seven years in hotels, bars, and fine dining restaurants all over California; before that, in my school days, my life was filled with theater tech, sewing costumes, and art classes. This summer, I was delighted to find all those again, waiting for me to love them again. At the Art Monastery, I was able and encouraged to fulfill every facet of my creative self.

I had so many wild ideas of what the Art Monastery was and how I would spend my time. I thought I would be growing vegetables and spending my days in monk's robes. On one hand, that is exactly what I did. But on the other hand, was not even close. This summer helped me find a part of myself that had just been waiting for me to come by and get creative, get spiritual, and love the world. I was charmed by the beauty of Italy and the town of Labro’s slower pace of living, and I relished savoring these—like the simplicity of a fig fresh off the tree

Coming to the Art Monastery Project is one of the best things that I ever did for myself and I hope to share this community and its values with as many people as possible, because I believe that the Art Monastery can change the world."
