2nd Annual
So You Think You Can Act: Family Ties
February 20, 2013—Gas Station Arts Centre

After great success last year, we are pleased to be presenting our 2nd Annual So You Think You Can Act fundraising evening! The event pairs local (non-acting) celebrities with theatre actors to perform scenes for a panel of judges—similar to reality television competition shows. Although the judges and Emcee will provide colourful and hysterical commentary, the winner is ultimately chosen by the audience. This year’s theme is Family Ties and will see a new group of celebrities vying for the coveted trophy and title! Just $25 gets you into the show, as well as the after-show wine reception. Purchase tickets here!

International Women’s Week Cabaret of Monologues
Wild Women
March 4-10, 2013

People all over the world celebrate International Women’s Week in March of every year and we are proud to be a part of the celebrations! As is tradition with Sarasvàti Productions, we will be hosting and touring a cabaret of monologues in recognition of women’s achievements in storytelling, acting, writing and directing! This year’s theme is Wild Women and will feature several stories of women from all walks of life. We will be performing the monologues at the Manitoba Hydro Building on Graham on March 8—check the website for details in the weeks to come!

Come and Gone

Diss High School Tour—October 15-December 14, 2012

After such an incredible run, our high school tour of Diss is coming to a close. Originally written for a Toronto audience, Diss was adapted by its original playwright Rex Deverell to tell the story of youth gang life in Winnipeg. The response to the show has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive! Teachers and administrators have expressed high praise for the show and the important discussion it inspires about peer pressure (whether gang related or not). The cast and crew have travelled to new and familiar places to bring the show to as many students as possible! We want to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragement throughout the tour (and a special thank you to all those that helped get our tour van out of the ditch)!

DISS cast: John Echano, Braiden Houle, Eugene 'GeNie' Baffoe, Lacina Dembele, Cherrel Holder and Lorraine James

Hands Up

We would like to welcome Samantha Walters as our new Emerging Artist in Residence. Samantha has teamed up with Artistic Director Hope McIntyre as part of ACI Manitoba’s Youth Mentorship Program. Learn more about Sam at the bottom of this page!

We would also like to welcome a new board member to our ranks, Anna Weir! Anna is no stranger to Sarasvàti Productions, she served as Props Coordinator for FemFest several years ago! She is originally from Brandon and is currently Career Advisor at the University of Winnipeg. We look forward to her contributions!

Hands Out

A special thank you to everyone who gave to our endowment fund at the Winnipeg Foundation this fall. Donations made before the end of November were matched to ensure the long-term success and viability of Sarasvàti Productions.

There are still other ways for you to show your support. We have just launched our online fundraising campaign in support of Jail Baby, which will make its world premiere in May 2013. This powerful play is the result of three years working in partnership with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Manitoba. Our goal is to make sure the story of incarcerated women and the debate around how to create long-term safety in our communities is accessible to a wide range of audiences. Help us meet our fundraising target - donate now.

Of course Sarasvàti Productions always accepts in-kind donations and corporate sponsorship from businesses who wish to show their support. If you contact us right away we can still access matching funds for sponsors!

Testimonials

“Our reaction to the production was very positive and enthusiastic. Artistic Director, Hope McIntyre, succeeds in having youth actors fully engage with the community’s youth, and thus creates positive, much needed discussion around the issues of youth and gangs. Overall a very positive, informative experience.”
- Sylvan Hamburger, group leader from Canada World Youth, on his and his group’s experiences at the free community show of Diss.

“Sarasvàti Productions works hard to give support to established female artists, but it also nurtures emerging ones - a fact that I have been lucky enough to experience firsthand. I am a student at the University of Winnipeg, and for the last couple of years I've been fortunate enough to see my work onstage through FemFest and other Sarasvàti events. I am a better writer for the experiences given to me through Sarasvàti, and I look forward to working with them in the future."
- Jessy Ardern, FemFest 2012 Bake Off winner
