What is self-efficacy?
Diana Antholis
Having self-efficacy is how you judge your competence to complete something. It’s your confidence in your ability to learn. Do you believe you can do anything you put your mind to?

I was in Canada this weekend—Montreal for my boyfriend's birthday and Toronto for my best friend's engagement party. One of the days we were in Montreal, we drove up to Mont Tremblant to go skiing. Now, I'm not an expert skier like my boyfriend but once I practice a bit I can maneuver down the mountain.

When we arrived at Tremblant, we got all of our equipment and next thing I knew, we were going up the mountain. It was taking a long time, a really long time, and as I was looking at the beautiful scenery of snow covered evergreens, I slowly realized that I would have to get myself down this crazy, beautiful, insanely big mountain.

I kept reminding him I hadn't skied in two years and that I needed a refresher because I really didn't have a good recollection of what to do. I thought I would be able to practice but we got to the top and immediately started going down the trail.

Well, I tumbled. I fell. I ended up in a mini snow sinkhole which totally freaked me out and warranted my boyfriend to come rescue me.

At that point I became really flustered. Even though my boyfriend guided me and told me exactly what to do, I had huge trust issues with the main technique of skiing: that when you move your body in the direction you want to go, your skis follow. For some reason, I was convinced that my body would not do that.

Until I started to trust myself.

The pivotal moment on the mountain happened when I wanted to turn left. I turned my torso and pointed it in the direction I wanted to go in, put all my weight on my right leg, and literally said to myself, "Trust your leg."

And what happened? I turned left. And then I turned right. And then I could go wherever I wanted to go. My skiing level dramatically improved to the point where the videos we took look like two different people on that mountain.

As soon as I thought I was losing control, I said, "Trust it." And it worked.

Until I crashed into another mountain of snow where my skis became stuck and I just laid there laughing uncontrollably while waiting for my boyfriend to come dig me out as I couldn't even see my skis or feet.

But besides that, every time I centered myself, trusted in what I was doing, and reminded myself that I had control—I skied beautifully.

Now this doesn't only go for skiing, this applies to any sport or anything that you want to do.
-Want to finish that race? Trust yourself that your body can keep going.
-Want to change jobs or start your own business? Trust yourself that you have the strength and ability to do it.
-Want to make a lifestyle change? Trust yourself that you can apply little changes every week to gain big rewards.

If you don't trust yourself, you won't make sh*t happen. (Click here to tweet that and/or like it on Facebook Like Skiing, Falling, and Trusting in Your Ability to Learn | Monday Mantra on Facebook )
