1. A shout out for Purple Ribbons!
In the weeks leading up to the December 6th commemoration of the Montreal Massacre, many people volunteered many hours to prepare the ribbons and cards for distribution. The December 6th Memorial Service was a resounding success and distribution efforts went so well that we now have virtually no ribbons on-hand for Family Violence Prevention Week (February 10 - 16, 2013).
If you or your group have any surplus purple ribbons kicking about that you will not be using in the coming weeks, please let me know: michelle@peistatusofwomen.ca or 902-368-4510.
2. Parents as Partners in Education Survey Launched
Parents and guardians across P.E.I. are encouraged to fill out a new Parents As Partners in Education survey launched Monday by the P.E.I. Home and School Federation. The survey is developed and carried out by consultant Vicki Bryanton and funded by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Education.
This is the second survey conducted by PEIHSF, the first one having been conducted in 2008. It explores issues related to parents’ engagement in their children’s education in the
English-language school system. The survey asks questions about areas of focus for the federation, such as parent-teacher interviews, volunteering, bullying and instructional time. After completing the survey, there is also a chance to enter to win one of five weekly cash prize draws.
Parents play a large role in their child’s education and are asked to indicate through the survey how they are supported by partners in P.E.I.’s system. “As parents, we want our children to receive the best possible education. This survey will tell us more about how parents are involved in the school community and how they support their children’s education in meaningful ways,” says Owen Parkhouse, parent engagement chair and past president of the Prince Edward Island Home and School Federation.
“Parents play a powerful role in our education system and can provide us with valuable insight,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac. “I encourage all parents and guardians to take a few minutes to fill out the survey and to share your thoughts on how we can enhance student achievement.” Results will be publicly reported and used by PEIHSF to develop new initiatives in support of improved parent involvement in education.

3. Free Course - The Best Interests of the Child in Custody and Access
Free Course for people who are experiencing a custody and access dispute.
You will learn:

What you can expect if you have to go to court to resolve a custody and access dispute.

How the ‘best interests of the children’ can be met.

Ways to resolve your dispute outside of court.
These sessions are delivered by a volunteer lawyer. Professionals who work with clients in this area are also welcome.

7. Sweetheart Dinner in Support of Anderson House for Family Violence Prevention Week
Looking for something to do for Valentine's Day? PEI Family Violence Prevention Services is holding a Sweetheart Dinner for Anderson House, as part of Family Violence Prevention Week. The event will take place at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino on February 16, 2013. Reception is at 6:30, dinner at 7pm. There will also be an art auction with work by local artists. Tickets are $60 and it includes your meal, $10 in wagering tickets and a tax receipt for $25. You will also be eligible for one of our door prizes. Call Danya O'Malley at 314-4238 to purchase tickets.
The cost of a pair of tickets represents the cost of sheltering a woman and child for the night at the shelter. We think this is a fantastic way to celebrate! Feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested.
8. Office for Rent
The Voluntary Resource Centre (VRC), located in down town Charlottetown, at 81 Prince Street, has an office available in a welcoming, co-working environment. Most offices are occupied by members: voluntary, community organizations & small businesses. This office has a window looking out on Richmond Street, and includes a filing cabinet and desk. Rental requires VRC membership ($100/year) and includes free mail box, use of board room, and communal kitchen. Heating and hydro are included. Wireless internet is free, but not guaranteed to reach all offices.

9. Participants Sought for Survey
I am a PhD student in the Department of History at the University of Waterloo conducting research under the supervision of Dr. Wendy Mitchinson, Canada Research Chair in Gender and Medical history. I am researching the cultural, economic, political, and social factors that influenced the availability of abortion services in the Maritime Provinces from 1969 to 1996. The study is being conducted with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
There are two phases to this project. In the first phase, I am collecting surveys from residents of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia who are willing to reflect on the abortion debates during the period 1969-1996. If you decide to volunteer, a 30-minute online survey is completed anonymously. Survey questions focus on demography, religion, political views, and personal experiences to determine the various factors that shape a person’s beliefs regarding abortion. Participation in this study is voluntary. You may decline to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer and you can withdraw your participation at any time by closing your web browser; incomplete surveys will be deleted and not analyzed. I may use quotes from participants’ responses and publish them in my dissertation and/or articles. In circumstances where answers are of a personal nature or could put a participant’s reputation at risk—such as a patient or medical professional’s experiences with abortion--I will aggregate data at either a regional or provincial level to ensure anonymity. The data collected through this study will be maintained in a de-identified, encrypted file on a password-protected computer and kept for a period of ten years.
The web site is programmed to collect responses alone and will not collect any information that could potentially identify you (such as machine identifiers). This survey uses FluidSurveys, a company based out of Canada, and secure socket layer links (SSL) encrypt the online survey and data during respondents’ sessions to ensure that your sensitive information remains protected. If you prefer not to submit your data through FluidSurveys, please contact me via email so you can participate using an alternative method (such as through an email or paper-based questionnaire). The alternate method may decrease anonymity but confidentiality will be maintained.
In the second phase of the study, I would like to conduct follow-up interviews with those who are willing from the group that has filled out this survey. Participation in the interview would again be completely voluntary and you may decline answering any questions you prefer not to answer. Your involvement in the first phase of the study does not obligate you to participate in the second part. There will be a question at the end of the survey that asks if you would like to participate in the interview and space for you to fill in your contact information. I will be conducting interviews throughout Prince Edward Island from February 10-17.
All information that you provide through your participation in this study will be kept confidential. Unless requested otherwise, participants’ identities will remain anonymous. In circumstances where answers are of a personal nature or could put a participant’s reputation at risk—such as a patient or medical professional’s experiences with abortion--I will aggregate data at either a regional or provincial level to ensure anonymity. The data collected through this study will be maintained in a de-identified, encrypted file on password-protected computer and kept for a period of ten years.

FREE HST Information Sessions – Charlottetown and Summerside
“Getting Ready for PEI HST Harmonization”
PEIBWA is pleased to partner with BDO Canada on the implementation of HST in PEI. This session is being offered free to PEIBWA members ($20 fee for non-members) and is designed to help businesses prepare for the transition and implementation of HST.
On May 30, 2012, Prince Edward Island signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the federal government to implement a harmonized sales tax (HST), effective April 1, 2013. The combined HST rate will be 14%. The provincial rate will be 9% plus the federal rate of 5%.

2. From the Canadian Women's Health Network: We Need Your Support
Health is a human right. Trusted health information protects women's lives. You know that because you follow our online services, like Brigit's Notes, our Webinars, and CWHN Events, so you can be current with women's health information. When the CWHN began, almost 20 years ago, it was founded because there was little information for the public on the health needs of women and girls. Two decades later, there are still many gaps in women's healthcare. But we also face another challenge. The public is overwhelmed by magazine ads, television commercials and websites that can damage women's health. Much of the media tells girls and women that they are not healthy or beautiful unless they take a pill, make a surgical cut or starve themselves. Even more worrying, many brochures and websites discussing health issues appear to be independent but are funded by for-profit companies.
More than ever, we need a national women's health organization we can trust.
The Canadian Women's Health Network has been the voice of women's health for two decades. I've been a part of the CWHN since the beginning, first as a volunteer and board member, and recently as Executive Director. Members of our board and staff are all dedicated to making the CWHN a dynamic organization. We follow all of the latest medical and community research and we translate the findings into user-friendly articles and webinars. We have one of the largest collections of women's health books, articles, and webinars. Our hard-copy collection is so extensive we've found a new and larger home for it at the University of Ottawa. e have over 15,000 publications and community listings available online through our eLibrary.
You also care about the health of women and girls. Many of you are involved in women's health beyond the CWHN. It's hard to ask you for money when many worthy causes are calling out to you for support. It may be easier to understand why a breast cancer charity or a shelter needs funding. But a national women's health network? Maybe that feels too general. But women are more than the sum of their parts. Without question, we need support for individual women's cancers and shelters. But we also need one place that ADDRESSES THE HEALTH NEEDS OF WOMEN AND GIRLS AS A WHOLE.
Only at the Canadian Women's Health Network can 360,000 visitors go each year to find information on hundreds of health topics in English and French and with more than 1,000 items in dozens of different languages. You can search through our database to find information on community groups from coast to coast to coast. You can find the latest information on health concerns from Addictions to Breast Cancer to Endometriosis to Osteoporosis. and several newsworthy articles and webinars on: cancer in the workplace; food security issues for women; and daughters of women in residential schools.
We really need you. Until now, we've been largely funded by Health Canada and we haven't turned to the public with fundraising campaigns. We have done much that is good with that funding, but on March 31st, 2013, all of our Health Canada funding STOPS. Gone. After 17 years of supporting our national efforts, we are losing almost $400,000 in annual funding. This is not a reflection of our value; the entire department that funded us has been cut. Some research centres are closing. We are committed to staying open.
We need your donations. Services like Brigit's News, our webinars and other news and event listings are paid for by the CWHN. We try to provide these services free to the public but we need your donations to keep these services going. Please make a donation and, if you can, share this letter with someone else you believe is also committed to women's health. You can make a secure online donation by going to our DONATE (http://www.cwhn.ca/en/connect/donate) page or complete and print out our donation form from the same page to mail in a cheque or credit card donation. April 1st is coming fast. Now is the time to donate so the CWHN is open for its 20th Anniversary, and for the next 20 years.
3. Information Sessions to Prepare Businesses for HST
The Province of PEI and the Canada Revenue Agency are each holding information sessions to help prepare businesses for the transition to the Harmonized Sales Tax. The schedule for the provincial outreach sessions can be found here, while CRA is holding webinars on February 5th, 20th and March 7th.

They feature food, entertainment and culture from around the world and are held at Jack Blanchard Family Centre, Pond Street, Charlottetown. Tea Houses will be held on Saturdays January 19, February 2 and March 2 from 7–9 pm. A Sunday February 17 Tea House will feature a children’s program from 2–4 pm. All are invited to come and celebrate our cultural diversities.

The East Prince Women’s Information Centre in Summerside is offering a
Women’s Employability Program
Starting in February, 2013

12 week program- 6 weeks in the classroom Monday to Friday 9 AM – 3PM, 6 weeks on work experience with an employer

Training allowance : $200/weekly for the 12 weeks while on the program

Classroom Facilitation consists of facilitated group discussions, presentations, small group activities, individual exercises, career counselling, resume writing, job search skills, hidden job market, interview skills, etc.
Support for this program continues throughout the 12 weeks and following for a six month period.

6. Request for Proposals
The Interministerial Women's Secretariat is issuing a request for proposals for project funding for community organizations in Prince Edward Island. This year’s focus is on the following three themes:
1. Social Media and girls - cybersafety
2. Women and girls with a disability
3. Engaging male and female youth (grades K-12)
a. to reduce and prevent gender-based violence; and/or
b. to promote gender equality

But beyond the numbers, what does that coverage say about women? What words and images are used - or not used - to describe women's leadership? Go beyond the headlines and get under the statistics in a fun, interactive workshop looking at news and opinion from a variety of media.
Help shape recommendations to better highlight women's leadership in news and media. Women and men welcome. No admission. Bring your curiosity, your red pen, or an example or two of media reports that tell you something about gender dynamics.
