Dear Colleagues,
Last week, Columbia Technology Ventures organized a “road trip to Vegas,” hosting student tech start-ups for three days of nonstop pitching at CTV’s booth in front of 150,000 members of industry at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Columbia’s excellent entrepreneurs included Kshitij Yadav of UdaComm (through-air wireless ultrasound); Marshall Cox of Radiator Labs (reducing energy waste via smart enclosures for steam radiators); Vincent Lee, John Sarik, and Brian Tull of Lumiode (brighter, more efficient microdisplays); and Nadia Pervez, James Scholtz, Mike Gazes, and Tanya Garza of Chromation (a low-cost, programmable spectral sensor platform). Also present was Professor John Kymissis from Electrical Engineering, from whose lab these companies emerged, as well as representatives from Remote Reality, a company based on work from Computer Science Professor Shree Nayar.
In addition to providing experience and exposure to these start-ups, one of our main goals was to highlight the phenomenal opportunities emerging from Columbia’s labs to industry scouts and VCs. Judging by the crowds at the booth and the volume of scheduled follow-on discussions, this was a great success.
We and our start-up colleagues also gained invaluable lessons about making the best use of these conference opportunities. Accordingly, we invite you to join us for our “What Happens in Vegas DOESN’T Stay in Vegas: CES Panel Discussion” on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 from 12pm-1pm on Columbia University’s Morningside Campus (registration required, register here). Four of these CES startups will be represented on the panel, sharing their experience speed-pitching VCs, running a busy booth, handling expressions of interest, and dodging marriage proposals (seriously).
We hope you can join us at this and future events!
Sincerely,
Orin Herskowitz
Executive Director, CTV
VP for Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer
