New non-profit “art laboratory” on Main Street plans full day of family-fun events, with scavenger hunt, artsy activities, free souvenirs, and
hands-on “Build a Museum” project
January 10, 2013 (El Segundo, California) – The community of El Segundo and beyond will be welcomed with open arms and creative activities at the family-focused opening of ESMoA. The new non-profit “art laboratory” located on Main Street, El Segundo, plans a full day of family-fun events and activities to mark its day-one debut, including a scavenger hunt and a range of hands-on projects to engage every age and generation.
Community Opening Day will run from 10:00am-5:00pm on Sunday, January 27, at ESMoA, with introductions and curatorial remarks on the museum’s opening exhibit, “DESIRE,” beginning at 11:00am. Visitors arriving on the early side will jump right in with a scavenger hunt and a kid-friendly drawing activity to inspire young minds into looking closely at the art works on display.
At 2:00pm, the main gallery space of ESMoA will be given over to a large “Build a Museum” project, with visitors encouraged to use various elements to assemble a mock gallery and create, label, and arrange original artworks.
Volunteers will be on hand to greet community members, answer questions, and facilitate activities throughout the day. Everyone in attendance will enjoy their pick of complimentary ESMoA souvenirs, such as balloons, stickers and temporary tattoos.

Community Comes First
The brainchild of art collectors Eva and Brian Sweeney, ESMoA is a functional art space designed to involve the community of El Segundo and beyond. Provocative, fresh and nimble, the museum embraces and encourages everyone to share in evolving experiences based on three pillars of artistic exchange: an artwork dialogue; a cultural-exchange; and an ongoing artist-in-residence program. Presentations are clear, unpretentious and functional, and focused on matters concerning the arts.
The Opening Exhibition, “DESIRE”
Like every exhibition to follow, the opening exhibit of ESMoA features a wide range of artworks – and artists – from the Sweeney Collection. “DESIRE” assembles “chaotic ingredients” by significant names in classic, modern and contemporary art to reveal our contradictory perception of nature and twisted approach to the challenge of sustainability as well as the community-focused curatorial principles of the newest member on the Los Angeles-area art scene.
Look for works of fragile and energetic material, ambitious and relaxed encounters crafted in oil and acrylic, silicon and metal, watercolor and pencil, photography and painting, on wood, paper and canvas by classic, modern and contemporary artists including Christo, Gustave Courbet, Camille Corot, Peter Doig, Wolfgang Ellenrieder, Lyonel Feininger, Franz Gertsch, Andreas Gursky, Alex Katz, Anselm Kiefer, Wilhelm Leu, Toni Matelli, Fritz Overbeck, Roland Persson, Michail Pirgelis, Camille Pissarro, Christian Rohlfs, Wilhelm Schirmer, Alfred Sisley, Michael Sistig, Amely Spötzl, Norbert Taddeusz and Cornelius Völker.
